Eddie Howe has addressed growing speculation surrounding one of his key attackers, as transfer talk begins to intensify ahead of the summer window.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference before Newcastle United’s Premier League clash with Everton, the Magpies boss was asked directly about reports linking Anthony Gordon with a potential move away.
Howe was keen to downplay the noise, stressing that rumours are an unavoidable part of modern football.
He suggested such speculation would only become an issue “if the player reads it,” adding that elite players must learn to block out external distractions and focus solely on performances on the pitch.
The comments arrive amid renewed interest from Manchester United, who have previously considered the player as a potential transfer option.
United’s recruitment team are expected to remain active this summer, particularly in wide attacking areas after already losing out on Antoine Semenyo to local rivals Manchester City.
Last season saw Untied reshape their forward line by bringing in Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, both Premier League-proven attackers, a profile that mirrors the type of signing they continue to prioritise.
However, the club’s depth on the left wing has been weakened following Alejandro Garnacho’s move to Chelsea and the expected permanent transfer of Marcus Rashford to Barcelona, leaving that flank thin heading into next season.
It is within that context that Anthony Gordon’s name has resurfaced.
The England international has been monitored by several top clubs, with Arsenal currently believed to be leading the race.
Liverpool and Manchester United are also understood to be keeping a close watch on developments.
From Newcastle’s perspective, there is little desire to cash in.
The club have no intention of selling one of their most dynamic attackers and would only entertain discussions if a bit close to their £95 million valuation was tabled.
Howe reiterated that speculation often originates outside the club, reportedly noting that “it is your industry who is creating those stories.”
As things stand, Anthony Gordon remains a central figure in Newcastle’s plans, with the focus firmly on finishing the season strongly.
But with major clubs circling and the summer window approaching, this is a storyline unlikely to fade anytime soon.
