Once deemed expendable at Manchester United, one midfielder has found a new sense of value at his current club.

Following an extended period of uncertainty about his future, Christian Eriksen has signed a contract with Wolfsburg.

After three years and two trophies at Old Trafford, Eriksen was released by the club earlier in the summer.

The move to Germany adds another stop to a career that has already taken him through Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan, and Brentford. It also marks his first spell in the Bundesliga.

The switch to Wolfsburg has been well-received around the league, with plenty of people interested in seeing how he fits into his new surroundings.

Bayer Leverkusen’s new boss, Kasper Hjulmand, has praised Christian Eriksen’s move to Wolfsburg. Hjulmand took over from the sacked Erik ten Hag, who was fired after just two league games.

Hjulmand had previously managed Denmark between 2020 and 2024, including at Euro 2020, when Eriksen almost lost his life on the pitch.

“I’m very happy that he’s found a good club and that we’ll see him back on the pitch. That’s where he belongs.

“He’s a very special player. Everyone who’s played with him says, ‘He’s one of the best I’ve played with. He loves the ball,” he told Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

Eriksen ready for fresh start at Wolfsburg

After joining Wolfsburg, Eriksen spoke about his enthusiasm for the Bundesliga and shared that manager Paul Simonis played a key role in his decision.

He said: “For me, VfL Wolfsburg is my first stop in the Bundesliga, I’m really looking forward to this new adventure. I’m convinced that we can make a difference together in Wolfsburg.

“The discussions with those in charge were very good. I immediately sensed that Paul Simonis had a clear idea for the team and also for me.

“The fact that the squad includes many familiar faces from the Danish national team makes VfL particularly attractive to me.”

Wolfsburg sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz told Kicker that it did not take long to reach an agreement with Eriksen after he became available.

“We are very happy that this opportunity has arisen for us at short notice. With Christian Eriksen, we are getting a player who has seen and experienced everything at the highest level.

“His enormous experience, his playing ability, and his personality will provide valuable inspiration, especially to our young players.”
