Fabio Quagliarella announces his retirement

Fabio Quagliarella announced his retirement on the weekend.

The veteran was released by Sampdoria at the end of last season.

At 40, Quagliarella admits he's in no shape for a comeback after missing preseason.

He admitted in an interview on the weekend: "What if I stopped? Yes of course (laughs), I'm forced. I am a free agent, but I am in unacceptable physical condition to be able to take the field.

"I will have plenty of time to understand the path to take."
