After Manchester United announced his departure in the recently concluded summer window, Christian Eriksen has remained a free agent. He is one of the attacking midfielders who has ruled riots in the Premier League opponents for years, but his age and his decreasing ability to find minutes at M16 indicated that it is time for him to look for opportunities beyond the English shores.
With his contract due at Carrington in the summer, United decided against renewing his stay, and he has been looking for a club since. There were reports of Wrexham making a bold move to attain his signatures, but nothing came to fruition for the Championship side.
And now there have been reports suggesting that the Denmark international is on the move. He is closing in on a move to German top-tier club VfL Wolfsburg.
The move is so advanced that the player is undergoing medicals for his potential new employers, according to reports from Football Insider.
And according to a report from Danish journalist Farzam Abolhosseini, Wolfsburg’s managing director Peter Christiansen was very integral to making this deal possible.
Despite his ageing legs, he did manage to score five goals for United in the last season. And then added another six assists to help Manchester Reds’ cause. This is not a bad output given how he was not involved a lot under the Portuguese head coach.
But now it looks like he will be moving to Wolfsburg and helping them towards a possible Champions League finish in the German top tier. The Wolves brought in Paul Simonis at the helm at the start of the summer, and he would be looking to replicate the success that he enjoyed with Go Ahead Eagles in 2024. And it looks like the 40-year-old Dutchman would have a magician in the middle of the park doing his bid at Volkswagen Arena.
Eriksen has always been a professional on and off the pitch, irrespective of whether he is playing or not. And while many would agree that his move to United came when he was running out of his peak, he has always put in his best every time he donned that badge.
Hopefully he goes on and inspires Wolfsburg to new heights in the coming season.
