Former United defender announces retirement

Former Manchester United defender Aissatou Tounkara has officially announced her retirement in an emotional Instagram post accompanied by a video celebrating her career.

The 31-year-old centre-back thanked her family, friends, former teammates, coaches, medical staff and every club she represented throughout her journey.

Tounkara also paid tribute to Manchester United, writing, “Once a Red, always a Red,” and described representing the club as an immense privilege.

The French international joined Manchester United in 2022 before later playing for Paris Saint-Germain and FC Fleury 91.

Before arriving in England, she spent four successful seasons with Atletico Madrid, where she won both the Liga F title and the Spanish Super Cup.

Across her international career, Tounkara earned 40 senior caps for France after progressing through every major youth age group.

She also won the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in 2012 and the UEFA Women’s Under-19 European Championship a year later.

Her farewell message also thanked Paris FC, Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, FC Fleury and the France national team for helping shape both her career and her life.

Tounkara concluded by thanking football itself for allowing her to “live 1000 lives” and become the woman she is today, bringing the curtain down on a distinguished professional career.
