Tottenham Hotspur have the chance of creating history on Wednesday night as they face Manchester United in the Europa League final. The Lilywhites can end the 17-year long trophy drought by lifting the trophy against the Red Devils. Winning the competition would also ensure Champions league qualification for next season.
Now, it has been a disastrous season by all means for the North London club in domestic competitions. Ange Postecoglou’s men sit 17 th in the Premier League table and have showed no signs of an improvement in the league in recent months. The Europa League is acting as the saving grace for the club and winning it is the only way Ange’s men can save their blushes this season.
The Spurs fans will be quite confident heading into the final at the San Mames Stadium. The Lilywhites have already beaten Manchester United thrice in all competitions this season. And like Tottenham, the Red Devils are also struggling to pick up results in the Premier League. However, winning against Ruben Amorim’s side will not be straightforward as United is the only unbeaten team in the competition this season.
Tottenham have the chance of gaining an advantage in the bragging rights in North London if they manage to win the Europa League this season. The Lilywhites would ensure a European trophy comes back to N17, something their arch rivals Arsenal have never managed to do. So, winning the final against Man United holds a significant importance for the Spurs fans for more reasons than one.
Now, to add fuel to the fire, Tottenham legend Micky Hazard believes Spurs will enjoy a better season than Arsenal if they win the Europa League. Speaking to The Sun, Hazard said,
“Are we a better team than Arsenal? No. Not at this moment in time. If we win a trophy and qualify for the Champions League — have we had a better season than Arsenal? Yes. It’s not a question of doubt in my mind. The game is about glory. Would you rather celebrate finishing second and losing the semi-finals, or walking away with a trophy that’ll also get you the Champions League? I know which I’d prefer.”
Micky Hazard insists that Tottenham are not a better team than Arsenal at this moment. But the Spurs legend says if the Lilywhites win the Europa League trophy, then they would have a better season than the Gunners. Hazard also adds that football is all about trophies and he would rather want his team to endure a dismal season and win silverware, than come second in the Premier League and not win anything.
For context, Tottenham have managed to register 21 league defeats in 37 games this season. Ange Postecoglou’s men sit just a place above the relegation zone and have not won their last six Premier League games. Whereas, Arsenal have just lost four league games this season and sit 2nd in the table. But it is the Lilywhites that have the chance of winning silverware and enjoy the bragging rights for the summer.
It remains to be seen what will happen regarding Ange Postecoglou’s future at the helm at N17. It was reported earlier that Daniel Levy would still sack the Australian once the season ended, irrespective of outcome in the Europa League. The fans will hope that the right decision is taken regarding Big Ange’s future.
