The result means that Wrexham is no longer in the promotion playoff spots of the Championship league table as Southampton leaps over them with this win tonight.

The league table sees Southampton in 6th with 66 points, while Wrexham is now 7th with 64 points. Southampton is on a four-game winning streak in the Championship and can dream of securing a promotion playoff spot that can earn them promotion to the Premier League with this win.

This loss to Wrexham has hindered their chances of reaching the promotion playoffs, but the team can still get promoted to the Premier League, as the Championship still has seven matchweeks left.

Wrexham has played its 41st league match of the Championship and has only seven league games left to improve its positioning in the table.

What Wrexham Needs To Get Promoted to the Premier League

In the EFL Championship, 1st place and 2nd place in the league table automatically get promoted to the Premier League.

Teams from 3rd place to 6th place will play each other in the promotion playoffs, with 3rd playing against 6th and 4th playing against 5th. The winners of each match will play each other at Wembley Stadium for promotion to the Premier League.

Wrexham is in 7th place at the moment after the 5-1 loss to Southampton tonight. Wrexham will need to win the majority of their upcoming matches and hope that Southampton, Hull City, Millwall, Middlesbrough, and Ipswich Town drop points in the next few weeks.

Wrexham is on 64 points, two points behind Southampton, four points behind Hull City, and eight points behind Millwall, Middlesbrough, and Ipswich Town.

If Wrexham finish in the top 6 after matchweek 46, which is on May 2, 2026, they will secure a promotion playoff spot, with two wins away from promotion to the Premier League.
