Backup goalkeeper Raffaele Di Gennaro has revealed why he wears the Number 12 shirt at Inter Milan.
The 30-year-old explained that the number is a tribute to legendary former Nerazzurri keeper Julio Cesar in the matchday programme for this evening’s Serie A clash with Empoli.
Di Gennaro re-joined Inter last summer.
The keeper certainly did not come in with any expectation that he would have a prominent place in the team on the pitch.
Di Gennaro arrived as the third-choice keeper, replacing Alex Cordaz.
But that doesn’t mean that the Italian hasn’t had an important role in the team.
Di Gennaro has had a big part to play in training, forming a cohesive squad behind the scenes.
A key reason why Inter brought Di Gennaro back is that he’s a player who knows the club well.
The 30-year-old had come through the Nerazzurri’s youth academy.
That means that Di Gennaro is a player who feels a strong connection to Inter. This is something that he has helped to instill in all of his teammates.
And DI Gennaro’s feeling of connection to the Nerazzurri is something that stretches some way back in time.
The 30-year-old still feels a kinship with a former great from Inter’s recent past.
“Inter has always been synonymous with dreams and home for me,” Di Gennaro said.
“Being back wearing these colours that makes me happy and proud at the same time – said the Nerazzurri number 12.”
“I grew a lot here, and experienced moments that I’ll never forget. Like the NextGen Series final that we won against Ajax during the 2011-12 season.”
“I feel a profound connection to that match because we’d really done something special,” Di Gennaro said.
“Players who were my idols were here, like Julio Cesar – He’s the reason why I wear Number 12.”
“This is the team I love, and it welcomed me with open arms as a child,” Di Gennaro said of Inter.

Real Madrid will face Levante on September 23 at the City of Valencia Stadium. It's an opponent they have not faced for a couple of years, and also not played that many times since both teams were formed. In the fifth blast, the two teams can't be split, with both winning two and the other ending in a draw. The next meeting will be just the 37th, and in the previous 36, Los Blancos have still netted 95 goals against Los Azulgranas. The top five scorers against Levante are the usual suspects, with a couple you may not have expected (per Transfermarkt). 5. Ronaldo Nazario - 4 Goals in 2 Games The Brazilian Ronaldo needed just tw games to score four goals against Levante. All the goals came in the home and away fixtures in the 2004-05 season. The home game finished 5-0 with Ronaldo scoring a brace, and the Brazilia was at it again, scoring both goals in the 2-0 away win. Both the strikes in the road game showcased his power and speed, with the second leaving the defender in his tracks before he rounded the keeper and tapped home. 4. Vinicius Jr. - 6 Goals in 7 Games Another Brazilian in the top five, and a player who could add to his tally in the two games this season. Vinicius Jr. has six goals in seven games, while also having two assists. His hat-trick helped reach that mark in the previous meeting between the two, a 6-0 home win in 2022 at the Bernabeu. He also scored a brace in the 3-3 draw in the same season. 3. Ruud van Nistelrooy - 7 Goals in 5 Games Possibly a surprise name at number three, but given his talents when it comes to finishing, it shouldn't be. Four of his seven goals against Levante came in the 2007-08 season, scoring twice in both league games; the first brace was in the 2-0 away win at the Ciutat de València. The Dutch forward also scored a hat-trick the previous season and saw a penalty saved in the same game. 2. Karim Benzema - 10 Goals in 11 Games Second on the list is Karim Benzema, the club's second-highest scorer of all time. His ten goals were also accompanied by seven assists in 11 games. A significant portion of those came in the Copa del Rey Round of 16 first-leg match in 2010, which ended 8-0. Benzema scored a hat-trick and also assisted twice in the thrashing. 1. Cristiano Ronaldo - 14 Goals in 14 Games Not a huge surprise who is number one. One of the greatest of all time, Cristiano Ronaldo, averaged a goal a game against Levante. In the same Copa del Rey game, Benzema scored a hat-trick. The Portuguese international also had a hat-trick, meaning a fight over the match ball. The season after he scored three times again in the La Liga clash. Only one other La Liga team has he scored more goals against in fewer games. The Latest Real Madrid News, Transfer Rumors More
Quarterback Baker Mayfield was forced to lead a game-winning drive against the New York Jets after a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown took away a chance for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to ice the game at 29-20 with less than two minutes to play. With 1:49 remaining in the fourth quarter, Mayfield engineered a seven-play, 48-yard drive that ended in a successful 36-yard field goal attempt by kicker Chase McLaughlin to give the Buccaneers a 3-0 start with a 29-27 win over the Jets in front of 62,872 fans at Raymond James Stadium. What Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield had to say about former coach Following the game, Mayfield said he felt vindicated by beating New York, especially defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, who cut the former first-round pick (after using him as a scout-team defensive lineman) when he was the interim head coach of the Carolina Panthers in 2022. “I loved it," Mayfield said of beating the Jets via Ari Meirov of the 33rd Team. "Their D-coordinator (Steve Wilks) was the one who cut me in Carolina. A lot of stuff was personal today. Haason Reddick. Former Jet. A lot of people.” The loss dropped Wilks and first-year head coach Aaron Glenn to 0-3. The Jets fought hard with backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor filling in for Justin Fields, who is still in the concussion protocol from Week 2. Mayfield didn't impress Wilks during his time in Carolina, but he showed the defensive coordinator why he's worthy to be a starter in the league. Mayfield went 19-of-29 passing for 233 yards and one touchdown on Sunday. He added 44 yards rushing on four carries against Wilks' defense.
Ashton Jeanty is not having the start to his career the Las Vegas Raiders hoped he'd have when they took the star running back with the No. 6 pick in this year's draft. Jeanty carried the ball 17 times for 63 yards (3.7 yards per rush) in the Raiders' 41-24 loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 3. Jeanty is averaging 3.1 yards per rush this season, with 144 yards and one touchdown on the 1-2 Raiders. Not all of the issues are on the rookie. During his news conference on Monday, head coach Pete Carroll said the team needed to improve the running game to have success on offense. He suggested Las Vegas is doing all it can to run the ball with the talent they have on the offensive line. "We're working on some stuff," Carroll said of the offensive line. "We want to see (Jackson Powers-Johnson) come back to action and get back involved. "We have to in all phases of it. We've got to get off the football better and make more of the running game. "There's not enough happening there to act on the play-pass game, and we're just not getting enough. So we just got to keep working it. We got the guys we got." The Las Vegas Raiders need to fix the offensive line Despite a poor game by the offensive line, quarterback Geno Smith was effective on Sunday. He threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns. However, he was sacked five times for minus-28 yards. The offense was much better than it was in Week 2 when the Raiders scored nine points in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on "Monday Night Football." Still, the running game needs to be a threat, not only to help Smith and the passing attack, but to keep the defense off the field. The Raiders invested in the running game by drafting Jeanty with a first-round pick. So far, that pick has not paid off.
A familiar scene played out at MetLife Stadium on Sunday night when Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had a heated sideline exchange with head coach Andy Reid in the second quarter of the club's 22-9 win over the New York Giants that improved the Chiefs to 1-2 on the season. Following the victory, Reid suggested his relationship with Kelce is just fine. Andy Reid downplays latest Travis Kelce incident "Don’t make too much of it," Reid said, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "He’s a passionate guy, and I love that part. I’ve been through a lot of things with him, so that’s all part of it. I love that he loves to play the game. That’s what I love. It’s an emotional game, so I’ll take it." Kelce went viral during the Chiefs' Super Bowl LVIII win in February 2024 when he angrily confronted and bumped Reid after the future Hall of Famer was not on the field for a red-zone play that resulted in a Kansas City turnover. Kelce later revealed that he and Reid "kind of chuckled about" that particular moment, and the 35-year-old then vowed last September that he would avoid such in-game outbursts. Kelce had a rather unspectacular performance against the Giants, as he recorded four receptions for just 26 yards. Andy Reid OK with Travis Kelce's passion "I love Travis' passion, so I’m OK with that," Reid added. "We didn’t have enough of it in the second quarter. We weren’t where we needed to be. He knows when to back off the pedal, and he knows when to push it too. That’s part of what I love about him. The guy’s all-in. Just sometimes, I have to be the policeman. He was all-in. He was all-in. Listen, he’s an emotional guy." Kelce may be in the early stages of his final season as an active player after he and entertainment superstar Taylor Swift announced their engagement in August. Thus far, he has tallied 10 catches for 134 yards and a touchdown for the ongoing campaign. Perhaps Sunday night's events will prove to be a positive for a Chiefs team that looked more like pretenders than contenders over the bulk of the season's first three weeks. Kansas City next hosts the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 28. 1-1 Baltimore welcomes the 1-1 Detroit Lions to M T Bank Stadium for a prime-time showdown on Monday night.
