Joao Gomes officially signs for Aston Villa

Joao Gomes has signed for his next club, moving away from Wolverhampton Wanderers following relegation to the Championship from the Premier League.

The midfielder, 25, made 35 appearances for Wolves in the English top flight last season, scoring once whilst providing one assist.

In his time at Wolves, overall, the Brazilian made 130 appearances across four seasons with eight goals.

He previously played for Flamengo, too, making 122 appearances across three seasons with four goals.

Now, however, he has made the move to Aston Villa, joining the Premier League side on a permanent basis.

Announcing the news on Villa’s official website, the club stated, “Aston Villa is delighted to announce the signing of Joao Gomes.

“The Brazilian international joins from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a permanent transfer.”

Fabrizio Romano previously reported that Wolves have accepted a £38m package for Gomes with the Championship side authorizing the medical with Villa to take place.

For Manchester United, Gomes’ move to Aston Villa represents another opportunity missed.

With Andrey Santos already signing for the club, and Youri Tielemans also making the permanent switch to Old Trafford, however, the club’s pull can not be underestimated.

Gomes’ move to Aston Villa represents, for him, an opportunity to prove himself at the very top of English football.

For Manchester United, on the other hand, the move is a pointer back to the drawing board, where other possible signings still remain.

The Red Devils are due to face Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday 7th November at Old Trafford and Saturday January 16th at Villa Park, two games where Joao Gomes and Manchester United may meet.
