Manchester United have already strengthened their midfield significantly this summer after completing the signings of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
Despite those additions, the club remain in the market for another central midfielder as Michael Carrick continues reshaping his squad ahead of the new campaign.
One player who had attracted interest from Old Trafford now appears destined for another Premier League club instead.
Joao Gomes is on the verge of swapping Wolverhampton Wanderers for Aston Villa after the two clubs reached an agreement worth around £35 million.
According to BirminghamLive, the Brazilian has already left Wolves’ pre-season training camp in Portugal after saying goodbye to his teammates as he prepares to complete the move.
The 25-year-old is expected to undergo his medical shortly before putting pen to paper on a contract with Unai Emery’s side.
Manchester United had explored the possibility of signing Joao Gomes during the transfer window and were among several clubs to make contact regarding his availability.
Liverpool also registered an interest as they assessed midfield options, while Atletico Madrid had previously monitored the Brazilian before Villa accelerated negotiations.
Gomes originally arrived at Wolves from Flamengo in the summer of 2023, signing a five-and-a-half-year contract at Molineux.
Since making the move to English football, he has established himself as one of Wolves’ key midfielders, making 130 appearances across all competitions while contributing eight goals and six assists.
His impending departure could now create another vacancy in Aston Villa’s midfield.
Villa recently agreed to sell Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, with the Belgian completing his medical and signing his contract at Old Trafford ahead of his official unveiling.
As a result, Gomes appears set to become the player tasked with filling the void left behind by Tielemans at Villa Park.
Although United’s interest in the Brazilian has now faded, Carrick is still believed to be targeting another midfielder before the transfer window closes as the club continue building on a summer that has already seen Santos and Tielemans arrive at Old Trafford.
