Manchester United’s midfield overhaul remains one of the key talking points heading into the summer window.

With Casemiro set to depart at the end of the season and long-term depth still under evaluation, the club are widely anticipated to prioritise reinforcements in central areas.

Despite Kobbie Mainoo’s recent resurgence and Bruno Fernandes continuing to anchor the creative burden, it is clear that whoever is appointed as the permanent head-coach will want greater balance and tactical control in the engine room next season.

We have previously reported on United’s ongoing scouting across Europe, particularly in the German Bundesliga, as the recruitment team assess profiles capable of dictating tempo while offering defensive stability.

One name that has consistently resurfaced in those discussions is VfB Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller.

The United forward took to Instagram to share a throwback clip of Stiller delivering a delightful free-kick assist for Bayern Munich II six years ago – a set-piece that Zirkzee finished with a crisp volley.

Zirkzee tagged the German midfielder directly in the story, instantly catching the attention of supporters.

The timing is interesting.

Six months ago, we covered reports suggesting United have explored a potential move for Stiller before Fabrizio Romano clarified there were zero negotiations underway, contradicting earlier claims that talks were advanced.

That situation ultimately cooled, with Stuttgart retaining their midfielder.

In October, we also reported that United continued monitoring Angelo Stiller closely amid wider midfield concerns.

At the time, Stuttgart were believed to value the 24-year-old at over €50 million, despite his contract containing a €40 million release clause that the German club can neutralise with a €2 million payment to regain full negotiating control.

Stiller’s profile fits the type that is missing from the current crop at the club: press-resistant, tactically intelligent, capable of progressing play from deep while shielding the defence.

With 5 assists in the Bundesliga this season, and growing international recognition with Germany, his stock continues to rise.

Zirkzee’s post may simply be nostalgia – a nod to former academy days at Bayern.

Or it may be a subtle show of admiration for a player that has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Either way, it has reignited conversation around a midfielder who remains firmly on United’s radar.
