Tottenham are set to enter the transfer market for a central defender to potentially replace Cristian Romero

Cristian Romero starred in Tottenham Hotspur’s UEFA Europa League final win over Manchester United on Wednesday.

The Argentina international produced arguably his best performance in a Spurs shirt. Strong in the air and tenacious in the challenge, he was rock-solid at the back and deserved to be named the Man of the Match in the Europa League final. After the tie, the centre-back said he loves the club very much when asked about his future.

There is no surprise that Cristian Romero is wanted by some of Europe’s elite clubs. The 2022 World Cup winner has been heavily linked with a move to La Liga, with Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid both vying for his signature.

It was reported earlier this month that the Europa League final could be prove to be Romero’s last game in Tottenham colours, and now Football Insider’s senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke claims now he is likely to leave N17 this summer. He states Spurs will enter the transfer market in search of the Argentine’s replacement, with their cash influx boosted by Champions League qualification.

“There are players they’re looking at and areas they want to strengthen in,” Pete O’Rourke exclusively told Football Insider.

“A new centre-back will be one of the top priorities for Spurs. Especially if they lose Cristian Romero, who has attracted a lot of interest and is likely to go.

“I expect it to be a busy summer for Tottenham, and obviously they can look at a different set of targets now they have Champions League football.”

Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi has been among Spurs’ prime targets to reinforce their defensive unit. The North Londoners saw their stunning £70m bid rejected during the winter transfer window but have maintained their admiration for the central defender, who has no shortage of suitors in the Premier League.

The 24-year-old has racked up over 130 Premier League appearances and 23 England caps to his name, which suggests he is a proven top-flight commodity. A leader and fantastic organiser of the backline, Marc Guehi is about to enter the last year of his contract ( Transfermarkt) at Selhurst Park. The Eagles demanded a premium for the England international’s signature before but may now soften their stance due to him entering the final 12 months of his existing deal.

All in all, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy must prioritise the signing of Guehi as he would be the perfect player to replace Romero at White Hart Lane ahead of the 2025/26 season.
