Mathys Tel arrived at Tottenham Hotspur on loan from Bayern Munich during the winter transfer window with a lot of fanfare and equal parts of expectations on his head.
The North Londoners also managed to negotiate an option with Bayern Munich to buy the forward on a permanent basis in the summer for around €60m. Regarded as one of the best young attackers in the world, the Frenchman’s impact at White Hart Lane has been minimal, though. He has made 19 appearances in a Spurs shirt, netting three goals and registering an assist—failing to live up to the fans’ expectations.
Mathys Tel was an unused substitute in Spurs’ 1-0 win over Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao earlier this week. At this point, no one knows whether the North Londoners will trigger the player’s buy clause or not at the end of the season.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is a big fan of Tel and wants to re-negotiate the price tag with Bayern Munich as they look to sign the 20-year-old on a permanent basis. This has now been backed up by German journalists Christian Falk and Tobias Altschaffl, who claim the Lilywhites could sign Tel for around €40m this summer. Their entry into the Champions League has given them renewed hope of signing the versatile forward permanently.
“Tottenham is now in the Champions League, and that could mean a lot of money for Mathys Tel,” said Tobias Altschaffl on the Bayern Insider podcast.
“That’s true, and we’ve also heard that Daniel Levy is still a big fan of his, even though he didn’t start in the final,” added Falk.
“The exit period from €60-50m would also go down again. I think over €30m is a negotiating basis, and if we land on €40m, I think it would be okay. So, the deal is still not off the table.”
It is worth noting that Tel was thrown at the deep end into a broken Tottenham side by Ange Postecoglou upon his arrival from Bayern in February. It was difficult for him to flourish and showcase his talent consistently in a team that was constantly hampered by injury problems and irregularity.
Yet, the Sarcelles native’s talent remains beyond questioning and he is admired by the Spurs bosses. The club securing Champions League qualification via the Europa League has become extremely crucial in signing him permanently. Tel wants to play against the best players in the elite European competition, so our club’s chances have been bolstered of keeping him at N17.
Being a tough negotiator, Levy must convince Tel to join Spurs permanently and bring the buy option down in his contract to €40m. And if our chairman can do that, it would represent smart business.
