Lewis Hall breaks silence on failed Manchester United move

Manchester United’s search for a genuine left-back option has been one of the more persistent storylines of the entire year, stretching well beyond the summer transfer window itself.

Luke Shaw’s fitness has continued to be a limiting factor, missing large chunks of the current season through a thigh issue that has left Michael Carrick short of alternatives on the left side of defence.

Patrick Dorgu was deployed there for the derby defeat to Manchester City, only to endure a torrid afternoon that included a mistimed header contributing directly to Erling Haaland’s winner, with Bruno Fernandes visibly frustrated with his young teammate afterwards.

United’s pursuit of Alejandro Balde, David Raum, Ferdi Kadioglu and Jorge Salinas over the summer all ultimately came to nothing, leaving the position unresolved heading into the new season.

Before any of those names emerged, though, one target had been United’s clear priority for months, only for that pursuit to end in disappointment even earlier than the rest.

Newcastle’s Lewis Hall has now explained why signing a new contract at St James’ Park, extending his deal until 2031, felt like a straightforward decision once Matthias Jaissle arrived as head coach.

Hall’s new terms brought an end to speculation over a potential move to Old Trafford, with United having been heavily linked with the 21-year-old for much of the summer.

“No, honestly, it didn’t,” Hall told Chronicle Live when asked whether the speculation ever felt difficult to deal with.

“I guess whenever you’re linked to another team, you know that you’re doing something right.

“I guess it’s just a credit to your own performances and how you are as a player, how you are as a person.”

He continued, “I took that as a positive, but at the same time, I knew how much I love playing here and I knew that since the manager came in, I knew the ambitions and what we wanted to achieve.”

“After not many conversations, not many training sessions, I knew that the manager was going to be really good for this club and I knew that as a team, bringing in new players and improving the squad was really important and as soon as we did that, it was a no-brainer really to sign.”

Hall’s rejection leaves United with limited senior options at left-back for the foreseeable future, with Shaw’s recurring fitness issues and Dorgu’s struggles out of position continuing to raise questions over Carrick’s plans in that area.

United are expected to return to the market for a specialist left-back once the January window opens, having failed to resolve the issue during a summer in which the position was consistently identified as a priority.

For now, Hall’s decision to commit his long-term future to Newcastle serves as a reminder of just how difficult it has proven for United to convince top targets that Old Trafford remains the more attractive destination.
