Lisandro Martinez expected to have Manchester United contract extended
USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

Lisandro Martinez has dominated Manchester United headlines over the past week following his explosive criticism of the club’s hierarchy.

The Argentine defender sparked controversy after United’s 2-0 Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid, publicly questioning director of football Jason Wilcox.

Martinez declared: “I expect more from our technical director,” before suggesting Michael Carrick had not received sufficient backing.

His comments caused considerable unrest, with former United players Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand among those criticising his decision to speak publicly.

The 28-year-old subsequently released an Instagram statement, explaining that his frustration came from wanting United to compete for major honours.

Further discussions with Carrick and the club’s leadership followed, with Martinez apologising and describing the meeting as positive.

However, the controversy has intensified uncertainty surrounding his long-term future.

Martinez’s current contract expires in June 2027, and previous reports from The Athletic suggested he did not want United to activate their additional one-year option.

Injuries have also complicated matters.

Despite retaining Carrick’s trust, Martinez was substituted at half-time during Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United after experiencing discomfort in his thigh.

With United struggling defensively and preparing for another demanding fixture schedule, a significant decision regarding his future is approaching.

Manchester United expected to extend Lisandro Martinez contract

According to Chris Wheeler and Nathan Salt in the Daily Mail’s Confidential column, United are likely to activate Martinez’s 12-month contract extension.

However, the decision would not necessarily mean the Argentine remains at Old Trafford.

The report suggests United could trigger the clause before selling Martinez next summer, ensuring he does not depart on a free transfer.

Crucially, his recent criticism of the hierarchy is reportedly not the reason behind his potential departure.

United are already considering changes to their defensive options, with Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite remaining of interest.

The club previously had two offers exceeding £50 million rejected for Branthwaite in 2024.

Activating Martinez’s option would extend his agreement until June 2028, potentially protecting his transfer value.

Nevertheless, no extension or departure has been officially confirmed, leaving the World Cup winner’s future unresolved.
