'Liverpool or bust'- Crystal Palace ace not keen in joining Tottenham; eyeing Merseyside switch

Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi has decided to snub Tottenham in the hopes of joining Liverpool in the summer

The need for a new defender for Tottenham may not be a priority now after Cristian Romero signed a contract extension. The Lilywhites were all over the place in the summer looking for Romero’s replacement as he was linked with a move away from N17. But the Argentina international decided to stay put and snub a move to any new clubs this season.

Now, we all know that a team needs to have solid depth if they want to compete for major trophies. The North London club have enough players to slot in as cover in the ‘centre-back’ position. But many of them are out injured, or they are far too inexperienced to play week in week out. So, there is a slight concern amongst the fanbase that Thomas Frank may run out of options if the club goes through an injury crisis.

What happened last season at N17 cannot be repeated again, and Daniel Levy needs to make sure of that. The Lilywhites need to be ready for any setback if they want to compete on all four fronts this season. And that means bringing in an extra defender to compete for a spot in the starting eleven. Even if it is not a priority for the North London club.

Tottenham have no chance of luring Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi to N17

Tottenham are looking to build on the Europa League success this season under Thomas Frank. To achieve that, the Lilywhites must be stacked in all departments as they will need to compete hard on all four fronts. That means, players will need to fight for their spot in the starting eleven as competition will be intense at N17.

Taking notice of that, Spurs tested the waters to try and sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. The England international has made it clear from the start that he intends to leave in the summer, and Daniel Levy made sure that Tottenham’s name was in the hat. However, the Lilywhites have no chance of signing the defender as he clearly wants to join only Liverpool if he is to leave in the coming days.

Reliable journalist Paul O’Keefe said on the Last Word on Spurs podcast,

“The word from within Palace, my Palace contact, is saying that it’s Liverpool or bust. But he did say that Spurs’ offer to him on personal terms was ‘very, very, very good’. But I think it might be a case with Marc that if he doesn’t get his Liverpool move, then he’ll stay the season and see it out, then go on a free.”

Daniel Levy tried to lure Marc Guehi to N17 earlier in the transfer window by offering him a good contract. But the England international wants to join the Reds instead and fight for his place in the starting eleven at Anfield. With Ibrahima Konate’s contract expiring next summer, Guehi believes that joining Liverpool would be the perfect opportunity to play week in week out and compete for all the major trophies.

Now, Spurs must shift their focus on other defenders if they want to bring in a cover for Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven. The Lilywhites already have Radu Dragusin. Kevin Danso, Luka Vuskovic. And Kota Takai waiting in the wings. So signing a new centre-back may not be a priority as of now as they have enough depth to get by for this season.
