Los Angeles FC seek a response to their CONCACAF Champions Cup exit as they host the San Jose Earthquakes in Saturday's MLS contest at BMO Stadium.

Steve Cherundolo's men enter this gameweek eight clash having lost consecutive league matches and three of their last four across all competitions, which the visiting side, who overwhelmed DC United 6-1 last weekend, aim to exploit.

Match preview

Having taken an early lead through Aaron Long to go 2-0 up on aggregate, LAFC would not have been blamed for thinking they could upset I nter Miami to advance to the Champions Cup semi-finals.

However, Lionel Messi inspired the favourites to a 3-1 success on the night and a 3-2 victory on aggregate, resulting in the Black and Gold Falcons' elimination in the last eight.

Aiming to respond to their exit, Cerundolo's team return to MLS action this weekend, eager to avoid a third consecutive defeat after away setbacks at San Diego (3-2) and Houston Dynamo (1-0).

Having lost both league fixtures prior to the quarter-final match against the Florida outfit, the Los Angeles side should ideally refocus on domestic action as they seek to climb the standings.

Last season's Western Conference team currently sit ninth in their section after seven games, though they are only two points shy of a trio of clubs from fifth to seventh on 11 points — Portland Timbers, FC Dallas and Colorado Rapids.

With eighth-placed San Jose just one point ahead of the Los Angeles-based club, a victory could propel Cerundolo's side into eighth if they secure their fourth MLS win of 2025.

The away team head into this weekend knowing the Black and Gold have been defeated in four of their previous five league matches and are eager to make it five out of six.

Bruce Arena's team came into last week's match against DC United probably just hoping to avoid losing in consecutive MLS matches for the second time this year; however, the home crowd witnessed an incredible 6-1 thrashing of the Washington visitors, with Josef Martinez scoring a hat-trick in the victory.

The Quakes arrived at last round's match on a four-match winless streak (with three losses) but returned to winning ways emphatically and are now aiming for consecutive victories for a second time this year after defeating R eal Salt Lake (4-0) and Sporting KC (2-1) in gameweeks one and two.

However, the historical record does not favour this weekend's visitors, who have lost the last three meetings against LAFC in all competitions by an aggregate score of 13-4.

Hoping to avoid another drubbing by their opponents, Arena will seek a timely second clean sheet, the first since the opening round, to have any chance against the 2024 Western champions.

Team News

LAFC reported no apparent injuries during the midweek CONCACAF Champions Cup exit, leaving Lorenzo Dellavalle (thigh) and Jeremy Ebobisse (leg) as the team's absentees.

Only David Martinez Morales has scored more than one goal for the Black and Gold, and the forward aims to add to his two strikes this weekend.

Marky Delgado has set up two goals this season and created two clear-cut chances, indicating that the 29-year-old poses a creative threat for the home team.

Hugo Lloris has kept three clean sheets, one fewer than Austin FC's Brad Stuver, and the Frenchman could equal Stuver's tally if Cerundolo's side do not concede.

San Jose will be without Nick Fernandez, Benji Kikanovic and Hernan Lopez, who are all sidelined due to injuries.

Cristian Arango and Martinez have both scored four goals heading into Saturday night's match , making them the away side's most dangerous attackers.

With five assists and four big chances created before this weekend, the Goonies will look to Cristian Espinoza to break down the LAFC defence.

Los Angeles FC possible starting lineup:

Lloris; Palencia, Long, Marlon, Smolyakov; Tillman, Jesus, Delgado; Morales, Giroud, Bouanga

San Jose Earthquakes possible starting lineup:

Daniel; Rodrigues, Wilson, Romney; Espinoza, Leroux, Tsakris, Harkes, Costa; Martinez, Arango

We say: Los Angeles FC 2-1 San Jose Earthquakes

With the Champions Cup no longer a distraction, LAFC are expected to refocus on the league, and they are anticipated to inflict another loss on their opponents, who have suffered defeat in nine of their last 12 away games in MLS since May 2024.

Dallas Stars lock up one of the league's best players with massive extension today in hockey history

The Dallas Stars have had many defining moments in their history, but few symbolize loyalty and leadership like Mike Modano's contract extension in the early 2000s. On August 21, 2003, the Stars officially locked up their franchise icon with an extension that cemented his role as the face of hockey in Texas. The move wasn't just about keeping a superstar forward, it was about keeping the identity of the Stars firmly tied to one of the most respected players in the game. Mike Modano's extension showed his loyalty and lasting impact on the Dallas Stars At the time, speculation lingered about whether Modano might test the waters elsewhere. Instead, he reaffirmed his commitment to Dallas, the franchise that had drafted him first overall back in 1988 when they were still the Minnesota North Stars. "This team, this city, it means everything to me. Staying here was the only choice that felt right," Modano said during the press conference announcing the deal. Those words resonated with fans, as his decision represented stability during an era when star players often left in search of bigger contracts. The extension also ensured that Modano would continue climbing the NHL record books in a Stars uniform. He went on to become the all-time American-born leader in goals and points, a record that defined his Hall of Fame career. Looking back, the August 21 signing stands as a cornerstone moment in Dallas Stars history. I think it was one of the smartest moves the franchise ever made, keeping Modano in green not only secured wins on the ice but also preserved a legacy that still inspires players today.

Green Bay Packers: Luke Musgrave’s Wife’s Stunned Reaction to Jordan Love’s Wife’s Personal Post

The Green Bay Packers are about to kick off their 2025 NFL regular season, so it feels like a good time for some of the players to look back at some of the key moments and experiences they’ve had in the offseason. For quarterback Jordan Love and tight end Luke Musgrave, the 2025 NFL offseason will always be one that they’ll cherish — and not just because of anything that’s football-related. Love and Musgrave both got married to their respective longtime girlfriends in the offseason. The signal-caller tied the knot with Ronika Stone in June, while Musgrave and Madi Weisner exchanged vows in July. Ronika Stone’s wedding lookback gets Green Bay tight end’s wife’s reactions Mrs. Love recently shared a post on Instagram that shows a series of snapshots from her wedding with the Packers’ signal caller. “Every detail was SPECTACULAR ,” Ronika wrote as a caption for the post. She clearly is still awed by how her wedding looked that day, with several beautiful flower arrangements adorning the special day. Ronika’s post drew plenty of comments, including one from Mrs. Musgrave, who wrote “UNREAL.” It’s great to see Packers players’ wives showing support for each other just as Love and Musgrave do on the field. For Musgrave, he is looking to have a big rebound in 2025 after only appearing in seven games and coming up with 45 receiving yards with zero touchdowns and only a couple of first downs on seven receptions and 10 targets. The Packers, who will play the Seattle Seahawks at home this Saturday for both teams’ 2025 NFL preseason finale, will face the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field in Week 1 of the 2025 regular season.

Browns' Shedeur Sanders struggles in preseason finale

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders had his first real "welcome to the NFL" moment on Saturday afternoon in the team's preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams. After a promising debut in the team's first preseason game, and then sitting out the second game due to an injury, he was back on the field Saturday and did not have a terribly productive day. Some of it was his own struggles. Some of it was the circumstances going on around him. In terms of numbers, he finished the day by going 3-for-6 for 14 yards passing, while also taking five sacks for a loss of 41 yards and a fumble before leaving the game late in the fourth quarter. He did have one catchable pass get dropped, and he also spent most of his afternoon running away from pressure behind an offensive line primarily made up of players who are probably about to be cut. But even with all of that, there were still some flaws in Sanders' performance that he is going to have to iron out. Specifically, his willingness to hold on to the ball and try to run away from defenders. That might have worked in the Big 12. It will not work in the NFL. The best example of that came on a sack that Sanders took for a 24-yard loss, where he refused to give up on the play and ended up digging himself into a deeper hole. That was one of the big concerns with Sanders coming out of college. While he is extremely accurate and fearless standing in the pocket, his tendency to hold on to the ball could get him into trouble in the NFL, where quick decisions and quick throws are essential for quarterback success. It is clearly something he still needs to work on. Getting work with the third-and fourth-string offense in the final preseason game is not exactly being put into a position for success, but you still have to make good decisions and not have that many big negative plays.

Browns 'trust' Dillon Gabriel more than Shedeur Sanders for a very good reason

The Cleveland Browns seemed to say plenty regarding their feelings about rookie quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders when they repeatedly listed Gabriel above Sanders on unofficial depth charts throughout August. Sanders played well in Cleveland's preseason opener at the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 8 when Gabriel was recovering from a hamstring injury. Gabriel then received his opportunity to shine in the Aug. 16 preseason matchup at the Philadelphia Eagles when Sanders was dealing with an oblique issue. For a piece published on Thursday, Jason Lloyd of The Athletic suggested that the stats from those contests show "the Browns trust Gabriel more than they do Sanders" heading into their Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7. "The Browns used pre-snap motion 45 percent of the time with Gabriel against the Philadelphia Eagles," Lloyd wrote. "They used it 31 percent of the time in Sanders’ game against the Carolina Panthers, according to TruMedia data. On third downs, that increased to 63 percent for Gabriel and plummeted to 18 percent for Sanders." The Browns selected Gabriel in the third round of this year's draft before they made a trade to take a flier on Sanders at overall pick No. 144. Against the Panthers, Sanders completed 14-of-23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. To compare, Gabriel connected on 13-of-18 passes for 143 yards with a pick-six against the Eagles. He was also credited with a lost fumble. "Gabriel was three of four on [tight-window throws] against the Eagles, according to NextGen Stats, and two of those turned third downs into first downs," Lloyd added. "Sanders was zero for four on tight-window throws against the Panthers." It's worth noting that none of this matters as of publication. Veteran Joe Flacco will serve as Cleveland's Week 1 starter, and the Browns seem serious about having Flacco, Gabriel, Sanders and backup Kenny Pickett on the active roster through at least a portion of the upcoming season. The trade deadline will arrive on Nov. 4. Lloyd mentioned that "a fear that Sanders may develop elsewhere" is a reason the Browns are holding onto the former Colorado star when they prefer Gabriel. As of now, Sanders is on track to continue his development while working in the Browns film room as an unused quarterback throughout the fall.
