Manchester United wide forward Marcus Rashford had been subject to Old Trafford exit links for a while. And he moved to Barcelona following his antics at Aston Villa in the last season. His season-long loan move to Camp Nou in the recently concluded summer transfer window came with a £20m purchase option included in the deal.
But now the chiefs at Carrington are said to be monitoring the England international’s loan spell at Barcelona. There has been a growing concern about his future in Spain, given how the 27-year-old striker has endured a disappointing start to life in La Liga.
And while he has featured three times this season, his only start donning that Barcelona badge ended in a half-time substitution.
Now, according to reports from El Nacional, the chiefs at Barcelona are apparently not convinced by his performances (or maybe his attitude) because there have been suggestions that his personality has not exactly lit up the dressing room.
Ben Foster tried to understand the situation when speaking on The Football Fill-In podcast, where he discussed how the Man United academy graduate has had a difficult start for his new employers.
He said:
“It’s not been a fantastic start, but if something like that was to happen, it would be a massive problem for Marcus Rashford.
“I can assume that Manchester United have got clauses in there, which basically safeguard them from anything like that happening.
The 27-year-old found himself surplus to the requirements under Ruben Amorim. He was also shipped to Aston Villa in the second half of the last season.
The Portuguese head coach was quite open to him on a permanent deal, and now there is a possibility that United will have to take him back mid-season if Barcelona end up terminating the deal.
The timing of this news couldn’t be worse either. Thomas Tuchel gave Rashy a rare international start in England’s 2-0 win over Andorra last week. But he failed to impress for the Three Lions as well. The 27-year-old had just one shot (off target), completed 24 of 31 passes, and didn’t end up delivering one accurate cross.
If we look at the stats from FotMob, it shows how he didn’t have any sense of the final product in the game against Andorra. And this is exactly something that Rashford has struggled with over the past 12 months.
Shots on target: 0
Pass accuracy: 77%
Cross accuracy: 0%
Long balls: 2/5
While the former PSG manager brought Rashford back into the English setup, given how Jack Grealish has found his rhythm back at Everton, we might see Rashford losing his place if he doesn’t pick up his form.
The chiefs at Carrington will definitely have put clauses in that loan agreement that would protect United financially. But if Barcelona end up cutting the loan short, the former Sporting Lisbon manager will again have a big squad headache, one he thought he had already solved.
At the moment it does look like Rashy is not in Amorim’s plans at M16. And if he were to return to United in winter, then it would only further complicate matters for the Manchester Reds, especially given how the club is already struggling to take these high earners off the books.
