Manchester United’s identity has been shaped by several defining moments, but few have been as important as the transformation that took place at the beginning of the 20th century.
The club was fighting for its future when new investment helped rescue it from financial collapse in 1902.
That turning point brought a new name, a fresh identity and the beginning of the red-shirted tradition now recognised around the world.
Before that transformation, the club competed as Newton Heath and wore green and gold, colours that remain closely tied to its earliest history.
More than a century later, those roots continue to provide inspiration for the club’s merchandise and heritage collections.
With Adidas continuing to develop United’s modern kit range, the upcoming season could offer supporters a particularly nostalgic addition.
Footy Headlines has now leaked a first look at Manchester United’s proposed 2026/27 fourth shirt, with a Court Green design inspired by the club’s Newton Heath heritage and created as part of a collection marking 125 years since the adoption of its iconic red, white and black colours.
The leaked preview features a detailed tonal pattern running across the front, back and sleeves, incorporating historical crests, shields and other heritage-inspired graphics.
Metallic gold details provide contrast against the green base, while Adidas’ Trefoil logo appears on the right side of the chest alongside a simplified Red Devil emblem on the left.
The design is part of a reported anniversary collection celebrating the change that followed United’s renaming in 1902.
According to the leaked information, a second version is also expected, featuring a traditional Manchester United red base with white shorts and black socks.
That combination would directly reference the colours adopted after the club moved on from its Newton Heath identity.
The green version’s exact purpose remains less certain.
It could be released as a second outfield design, giving supporters another way to celebrate the club’s origins, although it has also been suggested that the colourway could be intended for goalkeepers.
Neither the final design nor the precise role of each version has been officially confirmed by Manchester United or Adidas.
The reported launch is expected in early 2027, but there is an important complication regarding where the new shirt could be worn.
Premier League regulations limit clubs to three registered playing-kit sets during a season, which means United cannot simply introduce a fourth strip for an ordinary league fixture.
The restriction is intended to maintain clear kit registration and consistency across the competition, rather than prevent clubs from producing special-edition shirts for supporters.
That does not necessarily mean the design would be confined to shops and collectors’ wardrobes.
According to the leak, United could wear the shirt in domestic cup or European competition, provided the relevant competition’s equipment rules and approval requirements are met.
Special kit use is not automatically guaranteed, and the final arrangements would depend on the applicable regulations.
