Bruno Fernandes remains one of Manchester United’s most important players.

However, the club have reportedly decided to postpone discussions over a new contract.

The Portuguese midfielder has enjoyed another outstanding season at Old Trafford.

He has been viewed as a key figure under the recently announced permanent boss Michael Carrick.

Fernandes recently made Premier League history.

He recorded 21 assists during the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.

That saw him surpass the previous single-season assist record jointly held by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.

His performances were also recognised individually as he was named the Premier League Player of the Season.

Despite his importance to the team, fresh contract talks have now been delayed.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have ‘shelved’ discussions over a new deal for Bruno Fernandes.

Instead, the hierarchy plan to revisit negotiations later this year.

The report states that club officials have received assurances that the midfielder has no desire to leave Old Trafford.

Fernandes is currently approaching the final year of his existing contract, although united hold an option to extend his stay by a further 12 months.

Manchester Evening News reported that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the United board have decided to prioritise summer recruitment before turning their attention towards Fernandes’ contract situation.

The Red Devils are already closing in on a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson.

They are also continuing to assess other targets across multiple positions.

Carrick is believed to want reinforcements in defence and on the wing as the club prepares for a return to Champions League football next season.

Before joining Portugal’s World Cup squad, the 31-year-old reportedly held discussions with senior figures at United.

He made it clear that he intends to remain at the club.

That stance has helped eased concerns inside Old Trafford.

As a result, Manchester United are understood to be relaxed about the situation.

Talks over an improved contract are expected to resume before the end of 2026.

For now, strengthening the squad appears to be the club’s main priority as preparations continue for next season.
