Last summer, Manchester United made an incredible signing in the form of Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
On the back of two years with Andre Onana in goal, delivering inconsistent and problematic performances, United moved to replace their first-choice keeper.
Lammens arrived £18.2 million, with Onana heading out on loan to Trabzonspor, having now played his last game for The Red Devils, as they have no intention of reintegrating him into the Old Trafford side.
For Onana, the expectation is that he’ll remain with Trabzonspor, while fellow United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is set to join him in Turkey after agreeing to join Besiktas.
As such, a back-up keeper is needed for next season, however, United’s third keeper has now been secured.
Manchester United have taken to their official site to confirm the recontracting of Tom Heaton, on a one-year deal, who has been the third-choice goalkeeper since returning to the club in 2021.
The club statement explained: “Tom Heaton has signed a new one-year contract at Manchester United.
“The experienced goalkeeper will now enter a remarkable 21st season of professional football having made his debut at Swindon Town, while on loan from United, in 2005.”
Tom Heaton said: “It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United.
“You can feel the determination and ambition of everyone throughout the club to keep pushing for success. I am really excited to play my role in driving us forward and helping the group to compete for the biggest honours.”
Jason Wilcox, Manchester United director of football, said: “We are delighted that Tom is continuing for another year. Everyone is well aware of the importance of his leadership and professionalism within the group.
“Tom has played a key role in helping to support Senne [Lammens] throughout his first season in the Premier League; his constant dedication and mentality set a fantastic standard for our goalkeeping group.”
Having started his career in the United academy, Heaton’s journey has come full circle as he has edged closer to retirement at his boyhood club year on year.
Routinely over recent seasons, the 40-year-old has agreed a contract extension of a year, keeping his experience and leadership at Carrington to support the development of the other keepers.
Now this year is no different, as Tom Heaton is set to stay for another season, in a year where The Red Devils are returning to the Champions League.
