Manchester United set £6m asking price for defender

Manchester United’s recruitment has been one of the biggest talking points of the summer, with Michael Carrick continuing to reshape his squad ahead of another season back in the Champions League.

The arrivals of established first-team players have dominated the headlines, but decisions are also being made regarding some of the club’s brightest young prospects.

Carrington continues to produce highly-rated talent, yet not every youngster is guaranteed a pathway into the senior side as United balance immediate success with long-term planning.

Several academy graduates have already attracted interest from clubs across the Football League, with United weighing up the best approach for each player’s development.

Now another talented youngster appears to be at the centre of transfer discussions.

According to The Athletic, Harry Amass could be one of the next academy products to leave Old Trafford, with Manchester United understood to prefer a permanent sale worth around £6 million rather than sanctioning another temporary loan.

Several Championship clubs have already made approaches, with discussions over offers currently taking place.

The situation comes despite Amass enjoying an impressive start to pre-season.

The 19-year-old caught the eye during United’s 5-0 victory over Rosenborg, capping off a flowing team move by getting himself on the scoresheet.

It was another reminder of the potential that convinced United to hand him senior opportunities after his successful rise through the academy.

Amass also benefited from valuable loan experience last season.

He initially impressed during his spell at Sheffield Wednesday before completing a January switch to fellow Championship side Norwich City, although an injury interrupted his progress in East Anglia.

Last month, it was reported that the teenager favoured another loan move, with sources dismissing the possibility of him remaining at Old Trafford to provide direct competition for Luke Shaw.

However, United’s stance now appears to have shifted.

While Shaw managed to complete last season without injury, the defender is entering the latter stages of his career, while Patrick Dorgu has increasingly been used further forward.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui also provide cover on the left, leaving Harry Amass facing stiff competition despite his encouraging performances.

United’s hierarchy now appear willing to cash in if their valuation is met, with Championship interest continuing to grow as clubs look to secure one of English football’s most promising young full-backs.
