Matheus Cunha has become United’s first major signing of the summer, finalising a move that had been building momentum throughout May.
After weeks of speculation, Matheus Cunha has completed his transfer to Manchester United, with the club moving quickly to secure his signature. Cunha joins for £62.5 million, placing him among the top 10 most expensive signings in the club’s history.
The Brazilian forward brings added firepower to United’s attack, helping to address a weakness that has been a growing concern over the last two seasons.
And while he won’t fix everything on his own, Cunha’s presence should still be a major boost for the forward line. He scored 17 goals for Wolves last season, and will surely thrive again at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim’s regime.
Throughout last season, Amorim remained devoted to his 3-4-2-1 setup, using it as a tool to evaluate which players fit best into his tactical plans — and which ones did not.
That has led to a clear summer mandate: bring in players who naturally fit Amorim’s vision — and Cunha ticks that box.
At Wolves, he was part of a similar system under Vitor Pereira, who also deployed a 3-4-2-1 formation. Cunha operated as one of the number 10s in that structure.
This means there should be minimal adaptation required. Cunha arrives at United already accustomed to the style of play, giving him a clear advantage heading into his new role under Amorim.
Amorim’s style has made it clear which players are capable of thriving in his system — and which ones aren’t. That clarity has made this summer’s work in the transfer market even more important.
The signing of Cunha, along with January’s addition of rising left wing-back Patrick Dorgu, suggests the club has started this window with intent.
Ineos have followed up by getting an early deal over the line — but more work is still ahead if United are to back their manager this summer fully.
