Middlesbrough enter talks to sign Manchester United goalkeeper

Middlesbrough narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League last season, losing 1-0 to Hull City in May’s Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley.

The Teessiders became the first-ever team to lose both the final and semi-final of the play-offs in the same campaign, after being handed a bye to the Home of Football due to Southampton being caught and punished for spying on their opposition.

Kim Hellberg’s side now face an opportunity to bid for promotion once again, and are looking to strengthen both ends of the pitch.

The club’s striker situation has been solved with the £20 million signing of Tottenham Hotspur centre forward Will Lankshear.

The Boro will now look to replace starting goalkeeper Sol Brynn, a player who hasn’t given the most confidence to the defence in front of him in his time at the Riverside.

According to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas on X, Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek is of interest to Middlesbrough. While a deal is not going to be easy to do, it’s in its early stages.

Radek Vitek could be a clever signing for Middlesbrough, as Kim Hellberg looks to build a team worthy of promotion from the Championship.

The 22-year-old spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Bristol City, keeping 12 clean sheets across 41 Championship appearances.

Last season, issues in goal and up front cost Middlesbrough, and are being addressed in this transfer window. Radek Vitek could see a move to the North East of England as an exceptionally enticing one, to play under a manager clearly adored by the Boro fanbase and being backed in the transfer market.

Manchester United will be boosted by any transfer fee, following the signing of Karl Darlow from Leeds United as their back-up goalkeeper.
