Tottenham Hotspur have done well in the last few transfer windows when it comes to investing on young talent. Club chairman Daniel Levy has focused on signing emerging talents and backing our gaffer, Ange Postecoglou to develop them into standout performers, as evidenced by the captures of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall last year.
Archie Gray joined the North Londoners from Championship side Leeds United last summer, and he has been one of the rare bright spots in an otherwise sorry 2024/25 season. Despite his natural position being in midfield, the England youth international has shown incredible adaptability, making 38 appearances across all competitions.
The teenage prodigy has excelled in various positions across the defence, becoming a key player under Ange Postecoglou. Truth be told, Gray has ended up playing a lot more than he would have expected to in his first season at the Premier League level, rising up to the challenge.
However, unless the Lilywhites win the Europa League trophy and subsequently secure Champions League qualification, they face the prospect of losing exciting young talents if any big clubs knock on the door. A talent like Gray, who was recently praised by his teammate Djed Spence, is the present and future of the club, and with or without Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham must look to build around him.
But in order to do so, Spurs may have to show ambition in the transfer market and keep his potential suitors at an arm’s length, with ex-goalkeeper-turned-pundit Paul Robinson claiming it would take a humongous offer to prise the Durham-born talent away from N17.
“I don’t think that there’s a bid that would tempt Tottenham because he’s a player who signed a long-term contract,” Paul Robinson exclusively told Tottenham News.
“He’s shown his quality in his first year. And I think for him as a player to stay would be very sensible. For Tottenham, the value is not going to go anywhere. Even if Archie Gray didn’t play as many games as he has this season last year, it would have to be an astronomical bid. For Tottenham, players like Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, those types of players, the youth of that age, it would be important.
“You build a team around that. You build a nucleus of a team around that. I don’t think there is a bid that takes him away this summer.
“His value is only going to increase. And for Tottenham, the lack of ambition it would show to sell a player like that, that’s not where they want to be.”
Gray has a contract at White Hart Lane until 2030 (Transfermarkt), which means Tottenham have nothing to worry about for him as they are in a comfortable position. Even if higher profile clubs come calling, the Lilywhites hold a strong negotiating power.
Nonetheless, the club chiefs have no interest whatsoever in losing a sublime talent like the Englishman and would want to build a team around him. The ex-Leeds academy starlet has continued growing in stature with every passing game at Tottenham, tackling every challenge that has come his way with ease and poise.
Tottenham chiefs are aware that they have a generational talent in Gray on their hands. Spurs fans would be hoping to see him operate in his preferred No.6 role at least before the season concludes.
