Tottenham Hotspur are enjoying a brilliant start to life under Thomas Frank this season. The Danish tactician has guided the club to third place in the Premier League table, losing just once in ten matches across all competitions. The new signings have also settled in seamlessly at N17, further proof that the former Brentford boss has already helped the Lilywhites take significant strides forward.
However, despite the positive start, one persistent issue continues to trouble Frank as he searches for the perfect balance within his squad — the lack of a prolific left-winger. It’s a glaring weakness that is currently holding Spurs back as they look to close the gap on their rivals this season.
Many expected Tottenham to bring in a new winger following Heung-Min Son’s departure in the summer. Yet, former chairman Daniel Levy appeared to underestimate the importance of replacing the South Korean star, opting instead to rely on the existing options. As a result, Thomas Frank is now left dealing with the consequences of that decision.
Tottenham have reportedly identified Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth as the ideal long-term replacement for Heung-Min Son. The Ghana international has been heavily linked with a move to N17 in recent weeks, though it appears unlikely that the Cherries would sanction his sale midway through the campaign unless Spurs meet their £70m asking price.
To make matters worse, Spurs have suffered yet another setback in their efforts to lure the 25-year-old to N17. According to Keith Wyness (via Football Insider),
“He might be thinking about an overseas move, those are the whispers I’m hearing. I think that he could be going somewhere like Spain or Italy. I don’t see him making that move in the Premier League.”
Wyness’s comments suggest that Semenyo is open to a move abroad if the right project presents itself. Such a development would represent a major blow for Tottenham, who have been monitoring the forward for quite some time. Furthermore, Bournemouth would reportedly prefer selling their star man overseas to avoid strengthening a direct Premier League rival.
Tottenham should do everything possible to secure Antoine Semenyo’s signature in the coming months. Missing out on a player of his quality could prove costly, especially given their need for greater width and attacking depth on the left flank. Fortunately, the club may be in a position to act decisively thanks to the recent £100 million capital injection from the Lewis family, which has been set aside for transfers and player wages.
