It wouldn't be a typical Real Madrid season if one of its key players didn't suffer a season-ending injury.
This season, Real Madrid has lost key right-back Dani Carvajal to a season-ending ACL injury, a massive blow. He is the third Real Madrid defender sidelined with ACL injuries, a worst-case scenario for Real Madrid.
To aid the back line and defend its La Liga and Champions League crowns, Real Madrid should consider Sergio Ramos, a former Real Madrid star who is a free agent after leaving La Liga rivals Sevilla in the summer.
Ramos is 38, but he showed in his time away from Real Madrid at PSG and Sevilla that he can still play top-level soccer even as a backup. Ramos has experience playing in his natural position of center back as well as right back, playing there for the Spanish national team during its Euro- and World Cup-winning campaigns in the early 2010s.
All football fans are familiar with Ramos, not just Real Madrid fans. After arriving in 2005, the Spaniard became a mainstay in the starting 11, winning 22 major honors with the club including five La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League titles.
Ramos could serve as backup should Antonio Rudiger or Eder Militao suffer injuries. Plus, he could serve as the backup right-back to Lucas Vazquez or even start at right-back if needed.
Given the history between Real Madrid and Ramos, it would not be surprising if the defender even took a hometown discount on salary to return to Los Blancos in a time of desperate need.
Real Madrid's squad is now left thin in the backline after Carvajal's ACL injury as well as the preseason ACL injury to 17-year-old center back Joan Martinez.
Vazquez is the only right-back option manager Carlo Ancelotti has, and when it comes to center-back, Rudiger and Militao are the only natural fits in the senior team.
Los Blancos were hoping to get David Alaba back from injury in the near future. However, the Austrian hit a major roadblock on his road to recovery and won't be back anytime soon.
