Raphael Varane officially makes major football change

Raphael Varane has officially made another major change in football, sparking fresh discussion about the next chapter of his career.

The former Manchester United defender enjoyed one of the greatest careers of his generation before retiring from professional football in 2024.

Varane joined United from Real Madrid in 2021.

He made 95 appearances for the Red Devils and won both the League Cup and the FA Cup before leaving the club.

Before moving to England, he won four Champions League titles, three La Liga crowns and the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France alongside fellow former Red Devil Paul Pogba.

He also previously played for RC Lens and made one appearance for Como.

After retirement, Varane remained involved in football away from the pitch.

His latest role has now led to another important change.

Como 1907 have officially announced a new academy-wide heading management programme on the club’s website.

Varane, who serves on Como’s Board of Education, has supported the introduction of the new initiative.

The programme is designed to improve brain health while helping young players develop their technical ability.

Under-10 players will no longer head the ball in either training sessions or matches.

Heading will then be introduced gradually as players get older.

Strict limits will also apply to the number of headers completed during training sessions.

Coaches have also been instructed to reduce repetitive heading drills and avoid unnecessary heading practice around matchdays.

Varane explained that protecting young players must come first. He added that heading should only be introduced gradually and in a safe environment.

Head of Development Osian Roberts echoed those views. He said the academy wants players to spend more time improving their decision-making, technical ability and confidence before regularly heading the ball.

The changes continue Varane’s long-standing campaign to raise awareness about head injuries in football.
