This past Wednesday, Real Madrid put on a performance of a lifetime when they defeated Manchester City 3-0 in the UEFA Champions League round of 16.
Real Madrid holds a unique position in Champions League history as the team with the most titles. After winning the inaugural championship in the 1955-1956 season, they went on to win the next four consecutive titles.
With 15 titles to their name—more than double the seven held by the second most successful team—Real Madrid has consistently found ways to outperform their opponents and remain at the top.
One way Real managed to destroy their opposition was by buying the most valuable and talented players to be a part of their club.
Zinédine Zidane, Ronaldo, and David Beckham joined the club in the early 2000s, collectively scoring over 170 goals and securing one UCL title.
Later, players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, and Vinícius Júnior continued this legacy. Together, they have scored over 670 goals and earned six UCL titles for the club.
Some of the most prolific signings in the transfer market have been driven by Real’s ambitions.
In 2009, Cristiano Ronaldo became the most expensive signing in football history, costing the club £80 million ($106 million).
This record was surpassed just four years later in 2013, when Real Madrid signed Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur for £85 million ($111 million).
In 2023, Jude Bellingham became one of Real Madrid’s most expensive transfers when he was signed from Borussia Dortmund for a monumental £103 million ($149 million).
Real Madrid’s dominance in the tournament speaks for itself. While it is easy to acquire expensive players, the club’s true success lies in ensuring those players reach their full potential.
They have clearly learned from past setbacks, such as the 100 million pound (130 million USD) transfer of Eden Hazard in 2019.
With two titles since then and strong progress in this year’s competition, the 2026 UCL title appears to be well within their reach.
