There’s a familiar name back on the radar as European clubs begin shaping their summer plans.
Former Manchester United striker, Wout Weghorst, is now attracting fresh interest ahead of a potential free transfer.
Weghorst is being lined up for a possible return to Germany, with FC Schalke 04 considering a summer move, as reported by Voetbal International as relayed by GOAL.
The Dutch forward is set to become a free agent at the end of the season when his deal with Ajax expires, making him an attractive option in the market.
Interest is not limited to Schalke alone, with FC Twente and Benfica also monitoring his situation closely.
However, Schalke’s chances could be significantly boosted if they secure promotion, as they currently sit top of the 2. Bundesliga and are pushing for a return to the top flight.
The German side have already seen success with experienced forwards this season, having taken a gamble on Edin Dzeko.
Despite being 40 years old, the veteran striker has delivered six goals in eight appearances since arriving in the winter window, prompting Schalke to consider extending his stay even as he weighs up retirement.
Weghorst’s potential arrival would follow a similar profile: an experienced, physically dominant striker with strong Bundesliga pedigree.
The 33-year-old previously made his name at Wolfsburg between 2018 and 2022, where he established himself as one of the league’s most reliable goal scorers, before later returning to Germany on loan at TSG Hoffenheim during the 2023/24 campaign.
His time at United, however, paints a very different picture.
Signed on loan from Burnley in January 2023 under Erik ten Hag, Wout Weghorst was brought in as a short-term solution following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.
While he offered work rate and pressing intensity, goals were hard to come by, with the Dutchman managing just three goals before returning at the end of the season.
Since then, he has had spells with Besiktas and then joined Ajax in 2024, continuing his journeyman career across Europe’s top leagues.
Now, with his contract winding down, another move could be on the horizon, and a return to familiar territory in Germany appears increasingly likely.
The move would represent another calculated gamble on experience for Schalke as they aim to stabilise their squad ahead of a possible Bundesliga return.
