Tyler Fletcher made his debut for Scotland on Saturday against Curacao with the midfielder coming on in the second half off the bench.

Fletcher, who made two appearances for Manchester United’s first-team last season in the Premier League, had previously made appearances for Scotland youth teams but had not been given a chance at senior level.

In the match, the 19-year-old had 42 touches with most of his work coming defensively. He did pick up a yellow card, however, for a foul in the 68th minute.

Scotland are due to face Bolivia in a friendly on Saturday 6th June before kicking off their World Cup campaign later that month.

Fletcher will join the side in their World Cup journey after he was called up to replace Billy Gilmour who was injured in the friendly against Curacao.

The Scottish media have now been having their say as they react to the game and draw conclusions from its events.

The Scotsman gave Tyler Fletcher a 7/10, adding that he “brought some pizzazz to Scotland’s midfielder after his half-time introduction, although it must be noted that Curacao were a man light. Booked for a poor tackle but a promising debut.”

Fletcher did not receive such positive ratings from The Herald, though, who gave the midfielder a 5/10. In their explanation, the outlet stated that it was “a special moment for the young player, as he made his Scotland debut, following in the footsteps of his father, Darren.”

They added that he “put himself about, getting a booking for his troubles at the national stadium.”

Edinburgh News gave the 19-year-old a 4/10, stating: “A first senior cap for the Manchester United teenager as to follow in his father’s footsteps.

“Perhaps slight over-eager to impress as he picked up a booking for a rash tackle from behind. Didn’t look out of place and will learn plenty from this experience.”

It is clear to see that positives can be taken from this reaction although lessons are also present, too.

Fletcher may have the opportunity to prove himself once again against Bolivia in the final match before Scotland’s World Cup journey starts.
