Alexander Isak has reportedly asked to leave Newcastle United — the very club where Alan Shearer cemented his legacy as one of the Premier League’s all-time greats. With the Swedish striker now linked to both Liverpool and Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal, Shearer has shared his thoughts on the potential transfer.

Shearer remains the Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer with 260 goals — 206 of which came during his time at Newcastle. Isak, though far from breaking that league-wide record, was on pace to challenge Shearer’s club record if he remained on Tyneside for the long haul.

Despite that, Shearer isn’t concerned about his legacy being surpassed. Instead, he expressed gratitude for Isak’s time at Newcastle. “If someone’s prepared to pay what they [Newcastle] want, you have to say thank you and build for the future,” he said.

Still, conflicting reports suggest Shearer may be trying to convince Isak to stay. While he believes retaining a player of Isak’s caliber would be a huge win for the club, he also acknowledged the realities of modern football.

“If Eddie [Howe] can persuade him to stay, it’ll be great,” Shearer said. “But if he can’t, it’ll be very disappointing because Newcastle would be losing a world-class player.”

Former Club Owner Share He's Opinion About Isak Leaving Newcastle

Former Crystal Palace chairman and current sports commentator Simon Jordan also weighed in on the situation, echoing Shearer’s sentiments. However, he added a note of caution that If Isak stays, Eddie Howe needs to be aware that he’s keeping a player who’s not 100% committed to the team.

Alexander Isak has made his decision clear to Newcastle: he wants to leave. Liverpool is currently working to determine an appropriate offer for the Swedish striker, but Newcastle is reluctant to enter negotiations. If the club continues to hold firm, this saga could become one of the most dramatic transfer stories of the last few years. Al Hilal is also in the mix, reportedly willing to meet Newcastle’s demands — but Isak’s priority is to play for Liverpool next season.
