Although the Blues have failed to qualify for Europe this season, Chelsea is an English soccer club that has won European trophies. Most of their great European games have been played during the Champions League era, having reached three Champions League finals. The Blues have beaten the best teams in Europe, and these were a few of the best Chelsea European matches.
Chelsea took on European giants Real Madrid in the 1971 Cup Winners’ Cup final. After the first game ended 1-1, the final went to a replay. In the first half, Chelsea went in front with Dempsey’s sweet volley into Madrid’s net. Shortly before half-time, Osgood doubled Chelsea’s lead with a fine low strike from within the Real Madrid box. The game wasn’t quite over, as Madrid got back into the match after the interval when Fleitas pulled one back. Bonnetti also made some fine saves to ensure the final score remained Chelsea 2, Real Madrid 1. So, they lifted a European trophy for the first time.
In 1998, Chelsea and Stuttgart reached the Cup Winners’ Cup final. Although this European trophy was beginning to fade, Chelsea’s victory in the final still confirmed that they once again had teams capable of beating some of the best sides in Europe. With the game level at 0-0, Gianfranco Zola came off the bench and minutes later struck from just within Stuttgart’s penalty box to put Chelsea a goal up. It was the winning goal of the 1998 Cup Winners’ Cup. They were the last English team to lift the Cup Winners’ Cup trophy.
The 2012 Champions League semi-final included the Champions League champions, Barcelona and Chelsea, of course! Having gained a slender one-goal advantage at the Bridge, Chelsea made the trip to the Nou Camp with a draw required. Barcelona dominated possession for much of the game, and first-half goals from Busquets and Iniesta had put Barca seemingly on course for a place in the final. But Chelsea were far from defeated and pulled one back shortly before the interval. In the second half, Messi missed a penalty before Torres skipped past the Barcelona keeper to brush the ball into an open net. The second leg finished 2-2, and Chelsea went through 3-2 on aggregate.
Having defeated Barcelona in the semi-finals, Chelsea came up against Bayern Munich at Bayern’s Allianz Arena. This effectively made it more like a Bayern Munich home game. Bayern had most of the chances in this match but could not break the deadlock until Mueller headed the ball past Chelsea’s keeper in the final 10 minutes.
The game seemed won, but of course, it wasn’t, as a late Chelsea equalizer a few minutes before the end took the final to extra time. During this period, Bayern were given a penalty, but Robben’s penalty was saved by Chelsea’s goalkeeper. It was a vital save as the game finished all square. In the penalty shoot-out, Chelsea triumphed 4-3 on penalties to lift the European Cup for the first time.
Chelsea won their second Champions League with a surprise 1–0 victory against Manchester City in 2021. The Blues went ahead in the first half when a delightful defence-splitting pass from Mount set up Kai Havertz to score. Pep Guardiola’s men piled on the pressure in the second half, but a resolute Chelsea held firm in the second half to keep the score 1-0 until the final whistle. It was not a classic European final, but that mattered little for a jubilant Chelsea team that lifted the European Cup.
Those are some of the greatest Chelsea European matches played. Now, Chelsea begins a new era under the team management of Xabi Alonso. Alonso has quite a lot to do to restore the Blues among the European elites.
