Lazio have reached a full agreement with Gennaro Gattuso, who will soon be appointed as the club’s new head coach.
The Biancocelesti are on the verge of parting ways with Maurizio Sarri after a tumultuous campaign blighted by severe issues on and off the pitch. The 67-year-old manager constantly traded barbs with club president Claudio Lotito in the media, so a separation became inevitable. Sarri is now expected to sign for Atalanta.
The Italian capital side was linked with several managerial candidates, especially Raffaele Palladino, Fabio Pisacane, and Sergio Conceicao. But on Monday, it was revealed that Lazio reached an agreement with Gattuso, a manager who has long been admired by Lotito. The official announcement is expected to take place once Sarri’s contract is terminated.
Il Corriere dello Sport reveals the details behind the agreement between Lazio and the former AC Milan, Napoli, and Italy head coach. The 48-year-old will sign a one-year contract with an option for a second. His yearly net salary will be €1.5 million, in addition to bonuses.
Gattuso has been unattached since leaving the Italian national team after missing out on a World Cup spot. The Roman newspaper tells how Lotito had already tried to appoint him in October 2019 when Lazio were losing 0-3 to Atalanta. The Calabrian was reportedly on his way to Rome, but Simone Inzaghi rescued his job by pulling off a second-half comeback to earn a draw.
The legendary midfielder was also an option for Lazio before settling on Marco Baroni in June 2024, and once again last summer ahead of Sarri’s return to Formello.
