Manchester United enjoyed a massive turnaround season under Michael Carrick.
A huge reason behind that success was captain Bruno Fernandes, who produced one of the greatest creative campaigns the league has ever seen.
The Portuguese midfielder ended the season with 21 assists after setting up Patrick Dorgu against Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day, officially breaking the Premier League’s single-season assist record.
That achievement moved Fernandes beyond both Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, who previously held the record with 20 assists each.
Now, a new detail has emerged involving Henry and Fernandes ahead of the midfielder’s appearance on the Diary of a CEO podcast with Steven Bartlett.
According to the podcast episode, Henry personally sent Bartlett a message after learning Fernandes would be appearing on the show, wanting to pass on his admiration directly to the United captain.
The message read: “Please send my regards to him. I love him. Braino Fernandes.”
Henry’s praise for Bruno Fernandes has been consistent throughout the season, especially during his appearances on Sky Sports Monday Night Football.
While analysing one of United’s matches earlier in the campaign, Thierry Henry explained why he believes Fernandes operates differently from most players.
“He doesn’t play football,” Henry said on Sky Sports Monday Night Football earlier on in the seaosn. “He thinks it.”
Henry also highlighted Fernandes’ mentality during a match against Aston Villa, when the United captain was still demanding more from Amad Diallo despite the team already being in control of the game.
“Even when he wins, he demands excellence from himself and his team-mates,” Henry said. “That’s a real leader.
“My name for him now is Brain-o Fernandes. This guy thinks.”
The “Brain-o Fernandes” nickname has since followed the United captain throughout the season and now looks even more fitting after his record-breaking campaign.
Fernandes has already added the Premier League Player of the Season award to his collection after leading Carrick’s side back into Europe’s elite while cementing himself as the creative heartbeat of the team.
