Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap given green light to find a new club amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur

It has been a strange season for Tottenham Hotspur. In the Premier League, were it not for the already-relegated teams, the North London club would be in a genuine relegation battle. 21 losses in 37 Premier League matches has seen pressure ramp up on boss Ange Postecoglou across the campaign.

The Australian’s lifeline, certainly towards the back end of the season, was the UEFA Europa League. They were a different side in Europe and reached the final of the competition, where the Lilywhites beat Premier League rivals Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao on Wednesday evening to end their 17-year long wait for silverware.

Despite guiding the club to Europa League glory and fulfilling the season’s objective, Ange Postecoglou’s future remains up in the air. Daniel Levy must first resolve Ange’s future before concentrating on the summer’s recruitment strategy.

Meanwhile, Spurs have been linked with numerous players over the last few months. One of them has been Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.

Liam Delap joined Ipswich Town from Manchester City in a deal worth up to £20m last summer. He turned out to be the club’s best player in an otherwise sorry campaign that ended up in relegation at the first time of asking, netting 12 goals in 36 Premier League appearances. The centre-forward gave his all but could not help the Tractor Boys from going down.

The 22-year-old is likely to move on after just one season with Ipswich Town, having garnered interest from several Premier League sides. Bar Tottenham, Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle have all shown an interest in Delap, who has a £30m relegation release clause in his contract, while Manchester City can also exercise a buy-back option.

On Friday, Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna revealed that Delap has been given permission to explore his options for next campaign and speak to his potential suitors.

“Liam’s looking at his options for next year, which I think he is entitled to do and we support him with that,” said Kieran McKenna in his presser ahead of his club’s final game of the season against West Ham United (h/t BBC Sport).

“I think we have given him permission to do that this week. It’s a very important decision for his future. Of course, there is a lot of interest – and rightly so. I think part of his week has been having some of those conversations.

“It looks more likely than not that he will move on this summer and he has interest from pretty much every club in the league, and I don’t think there are many clubs in the world who wouldn’t want to have him.”

This update from Mckenna should come as a big boost for Spurs, who are eyeing attacking reinforcements. Futures of Richarlison and Son Heung-min remain up in the air , and despite the club keen towards signing Mathys Tel permanently from Bayern Munich, a striker to cover and compete with Dominic Solanke next season is an absolute must.

That’s why Tottenham’s interest in Delap makes sense. The N17-based outfit’s Champions League qualification would also boost their chances of landing the Winchester-born talent, who has proven himself in a poor Ipswich side.

Now that Delap has been given permission to sort out his future, Levy and Co. must do everything within their powers to lure him to White Hart Lane.
