West Ham United identify Mateus Fernandes replacement

Mateus Fernandes has attracted interest from Manchester United, creating the possibility of a move to Old Trafford.

The West Ham United midfielder, who has been with the Hammers for just one season, has experienced back-to-back relegations given his relegation to the Championship with West Ham and Southampton respectively.

Relegation for West Ham means a summer of huge change will be required, change that already appears to be occuring with David Sullivan already leaving the club.

Yet, outgoings are also likely too in the transfer window. Fernandes has been identified as one of the players who could leave the London Stadium this summer to create further funds for transfers.

West Ham United have laid out an £80m pricetag for the midfielder ahead of the summer transfer window which opens later this month.

The Athletic have now provided an update to the situation with the outlet reporting that the  Hammers are interested in Sheffield United midfielder Sydie Peck.

The 21-year-old, who joined the Blades in 2023, made 40 appearances last season in the Championship, scoring five goals and providing four assists.

Peck has been with Sheffield United for three seasons but could attract a move from West Ham this summer.

The Hammers are reportedly desperate to keep hold of Mateus Fernandes to help the club claim an automatic return to the Premier League.

It remains to be seen whether Fernandes’ situation at West Ham will affect any potential pursuit of Peck.

If Manchester United decide to make a move for Mateus Fernandes in the summer transfer window, West Ham may be more likely to move for Sydie Peck although there are no guarantees.

The Hammers need to raise £150m in sales this summer, as reported by The Athletic. Whether Fernandes forms a part of this is unclear yet although it is likely to be a situation that West Ham look to avoid.
