The United States Men's National Team returns to action this week with a crucial doubleheader against Jamaica in the CONCACAF Nations League.
It's the team's second run of games under new coach Mauricio Pochettino and wins here are important. If the USMNT can't overcome Jamaica over this two-legged tie, it will be eliminated from the Nations League altogether.
Pochettino announced his 25-man camp for these Jamaica fixtures this weekend. While many faces, like AC Milan's Christian Pulisic and FC Cincinnati's Miles Robinson, are familiar, Pochettino made some significant changes to the camp he selected for his first USMNT games in October.
Here's who is in — and who is out — of Pochettino's USMNT as it gears up for the Nations League:

In: Chris Richards (Crystal Palace) - The USMNT's defense has been a sticking point for fans in recent seasons; many make jokes that U.S. Soccer's motto of "Only Forwards" simply underlines that the team doesn't have a reliable backline to speak of. But Richards, a 24-year-old defender who came up through the FC Dallas youth system, might be the missing piece to change that. He was instrumental in Crystal Palace's surprise run of form at the end of the 2023-24 season, and his hamstring injury this year has left both Palace and the USMNT adrift. It's great to see him back in the lineup; let's hope he's ready to compete.
Out: Kristoffer Lund (Palermo) - Kristoffer Lund Hansen, a young left-back who shares citizenship with Denmark, hasn't had much consistency with the USMNT. Three separate coaches — Gregg Berhalter, B. J. Callaghan and Mikey Varas — left him outside of their starting lineups, and it looks like Pochettino is taking the same approach. Lund had a rough time against Mexico in his last USMNT performance and hasn't impressed his club team in Italy. With other left-backs like Celtic's Auston Trusty stepping up in his absence, it may be a while before we see Lund in a USMNT shirt again.

In: Alex Zendejas (Club America) - Pochettino's first USMNT stint in October featured a match against Mexico. It was puzzling, then, to see him leave Zendejas out of his initial USMNT camp. No one in the USMNT sphere is better suited to face Mexico than Zendejas. He was born there, plays his club soccer there and knows the members of El Tri nearly as well as he knows his teammates.
Zendejas was added to Pochettino's squad at the last minute to backfill an injured player; he seized his opportunity with abandon and caused glorious chaos every time he took the field. Pochettino took notice. He's called up Zendejas with the regular squad this time around, and the USMNT is better for it.

Out: Folarin Balogun (Monaco), Josh Sargent (Norwich City) and Haji Wright (Coventry City) - There's no drama or intrigue behind these absentees; all three of these USMNT strikers are unavailable due to long-term injuries. But their absence opens up a real opportunity for some of the USMNT's unheralded strikers. With Balogun, Sargent and Wright — three players who received most of the starting striker opportunities under Berhalter — unavailable, could someone like Monterrey's Brandon Vazquez or PSV's Ricardo Pepi step up and make the position their own?

Alexander Isak’s ongoing refusal to train with Newcastle ahead of the new season will only encourage optimism over a Liverpool transfer. The Swede’s boss, Eddie Howe, admitted on Sunday that he wasn’t sure whether the striker would play a part in training ahead of the new season. It still remains to be seen, of course, whether or not the Magpies are prepared to sanction the 25-year-old’s exit without having first signed a successor. Talks are ongoing with RB Leipzig over the potential addition of Benjamin Sesko. That said, Newcastle do face competition from Manchester United. Liverpool may get Alexander Isak decision soon amid Benjamin Sesko talks Fabrizio Romano reported on X (formerly Twitter) this Saturday that Benjamin Sesko’s agent has already arrived in Leipzig ahead of a potential ‘final decision’ over his next club. Given the surrounding context around Liverpool’s clear interest in Alexander Isak, this could mean good news for Newcastle – and, in turn, very good news for Arne Slot’s Reds! For what it’s worth, however, a positive outcome for the Magpies is still far from guaranteed. In fact, separate reporting indicates that the Slovenian striker would actually prefer a move to Old Trafford. That’s a bit of a baffling position for the player to take, given we’re talking about a side that finished 15th in the Premier League table last term. Certainly, it’s a pity that Sesko’s management isn’t considering a Newcastle side fresh off securing Champions League football and looking their most competent selves. Alas, here we are. We’d still argue Howe’s men represent the most interesting project for a potential signing, but it remains to be seen whether the Bundesliga man can be convinced of this. Eddie Howe just poured some FUEL on the Isak to Liverpool transfer saga! #fyp #lfc #liverpool #liverpoolfc #isak ♬ original sound – Farrell Keeling Newcastle have already seen this film before with Anthony Gordon Football is a naturally hypocritical world. What suits one club one week will just as likely incite outrage in another. Liverpool, certainly, have been no stranger to top assets seeking pastures new (and objectively greener). The tables, in recent years, however, have turned, with shrewd business and competitive success transforming the club into an elite force in the market. But let’s not be naive here as far as Newcastle are concerned. Liverpool are hardly alone in having benefited from an unsettled target opting to avoid training with a view to forcing a move. See “Exhibit A” kindly shared on X by The Anfield Wrap’s Rob Gutmann. The Daily Mail article in question details ex-Everton man Anthony Gordon’s decision to skip out on team training amid talks with Newcastle back in January 2023 over a transfer. You win some and you lose some, but someone somewhere is always going to be left hurt by a transfer saga developing in such a way. Newcastle may be a rising force, but they (and their top talents) are not yet immune to the allure of a European behemoth like Liverpool.
Green Bay Packers star quarterback Jordan Love and his wife, Ronika Stone Love, are truly in, well, love. The couple just got married in June, and with the Packers deep into their preparation for the upcoming 2025 NFL season, Ronika shows full support for her husband. In a social media post on Instagram, Ronika shared a series of photos from last Saturday’s Packers Family Night at Lambeau Field. The first photo on the post shows a happy Ronika in the arms of the former Utah State Aggies star signal-caller. “My version of a Lambeau Leap,” Ronika wrote as a caption. Last season, Love played in 15 games, throwing for a total of 3,389 passing yards to go along with 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. That year was considered a down one for Love, but many expect him to come up with a bigger performance in 2025, as Green Bay looks to surpass its 11-win total in 2024. Fans react to Jordan Love’s wife’s Green Bay Packers Lambeau Leap Apart from Love, many others reacted to Ronika’s heartwarming post. Here are some of them: “Two Green Bay 10’s right there,” said a fan. Another one said: “Hair looks amazing” From a commenter: “Awhhhh y’all are so cute!! And I’m obsessed with the hair it’s giving SZA!! ” “Love the Loves!,” a social media user posted. Via a different commenter: “your outfit is adorable” Said another: “I love the fit! Both of yall ”
Adam Peters is still trying to put together an acceptable contract offer that works for wide receiver Terry McLaurin. But the Washington Commanders general manager has some crucial roster decisions upcoming with final cuts on the not-too-distant horizon. Training camp is in full swing. Preseason games and joint practices are upcoming, which represent a good measuring stick for the Commanders to determine the fate of some who have their respective futures hanging in the balance. There will be no sentiment whatsoever attached to the team's decision-making process. And for one multi-purpose weapon, his status is becoming increasingly precarious. Kazmeir Allen could be the odd man out in Commanders' offensive dynamic The competition for places is fierce. This bears more significance in the running back room, although Peters didn't do much to fortify the unit during a busy second recruitment period at the helm. Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler will lead the charge. They have experience and proven production, but they will both need to improve to get new deals from the franchise next spring. And then, there's the presence of seventh-round rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt to factor into the equation. Croskey-Merritt has blazed a trail from the moment he joined the organization. He's flashed exceptional promise, which could lead to rotational involvement right out of the gate if he passes some difficult upcoming tests with flying colors. That doesn't bode well for anyone else looking to make the roster. Kazmeir Allen is among them, but it's looking unlikely that the dual-threat out of UCLA is going to find his name on the final 53-man squad. Allen has versatility. He can play at running back or wide receiver with minimal fuss. The elusive former undrafted free agent is also a dynamic kick returner. Unfortunately, the Commanders have a few others capable of picking up the slack in that regard. Ekeler, Jaylin Lane, Luke McCaffrey, Jeremy McNichols, and even Deebo Samuel Sr. have all been getting looks in the return game at training camp. Allen won't be giving up without a fight, but it's clear that he's further down the pecking order than ever before. There's a chance Allen can stick around on the practice squad, as he's done for the last couple of years. That represents the best-case scenario. A bold yet attainable objective for the third-year pro, even though he'd probably like something more substantial. How Allen performs in the preseason will ultimately determine his fate. But from the outside looking in, he faces a significant fight to change the narrative. More Commanders news and analysis
With training camps approaching in one month, the Boston Celtics could add an interesting player to their roster. This addition would provide depth to their center rotation, which remains a significant hole they need to address. Currently, the Boston Celtics’ center rotation includes Xavier Tillman, Luka Garza, and Neemias Queta. All three players either lack experience or consistent production, and none match the quality of their previous rotation featuring Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and Luke Kornet. The potential addition doesn’t reach the caliber of Porzingis or Horford, and isn’t even close to Kornet’s level. However, there’s development potential given that he’s only 24 years old. Charles Bassey, the former San Antonio Spurs player who competed with the Celtics during last summer’s league, has emerged as the candidate in question. Bassey chooses NBA over European opportunity NBA insider Noa Dazzell reported that Bassey prefers playing for the Celtics next season rather than accepting an overseas offer with Partizan Belgrade in the Serbian League. “He’s not currently planning on going overseas, that seems to be pretty unlikely, and almost like a last resort type of thing. And right now, I think, you know, he feels pretty confident that he’s going to play in the NBA next season,” Dazzell explained. “He currently still views the Celtics as a top destination, and really, really wants to end up in Boston. And that’s not me saying that that’s going to happen, but that’s a top priority for him. He loves the culture. He loves the fact that they’ve been in the playoffs routinely. It’s a culture of winning, the coaches,” she added. Boston has roster spot available for potential signing The Celtics maintain one open roster spot that could accommodate Bassey’s addition. His summer league performance with Boston demonstrated his potential value to the organization. “He really wants to come to the Celtics. We’ll see whether it works out right now. Boston has one remaining roster spot that’s open,” Dazzell noted. Bassey’s summer league production included impressive numbers of 15.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game. These statistics explain why other teams like Partizan Belgrade have shown interest in acquiring his services, as well as the fact that he is athletic rim‑runner with elite length and shot‑blocking instincts. His strong summer showing could translate to meaningful NBA contributions if he maintains his health and development trajectory. Injury history creates concern about reliability Bassey has struggled with health issues throughout his NBA career, frequently dealing with injuries that have limited his availability. His most significant setback came with an ACL injury in 2023 that restricted him to only 19 games that season. Last season with the Spurs, he appeared in 36 games while averaging modest numbers of 4.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks per game. The limited production reflects both his role and ongoing health challenges. His injury history raises questions about long-term reliability, but his youth and potential upside could make him worth the risk for a team who needs depth in the center area like Boston.
