Lionel Messi's arrival in the MLS in the summer of 2023 marked an exciting time for many American soccer fans. He chose to join Inter Miami, and now the MLS has grown to great heights.

One of the popular concepts in the MLS is the MLS All-Star Game, which brings elite players from different MLS teams together. Messi did not feature in the 2023 MLS All-Star Game and was called up to the friendly game last year.

Messi missed out due to an ankle injury he suffered in the 2024 Copa America Final. Now in 2025, Messi was once again called up for the MLS All-Star this year, and many expected the Argentine star to finally participate.

Signs of his absence started when reports suggested he would miss the MLS Skills Challenge and MLS Media Day. Speculation of him missing the game entirely occurred when he did not train with the rest of the MLS All-Stars Team.

Messi will miss the game completely, along with another Inter Miami star, Jordi Alba, who was also a part of the 2025 MLS All-Star roster.

Is Lionel Messi Injured?

After missing the first training session with the rest of the MLS All-Star team, sources reported that Messi would arrive at the game on Wednesday, without attending a training session.

His absence was not due to a reported injury. He played the full game against NY Red Bulls this past weekend. Despite being fit for the game, Messi and Alba will not play the MLS All-Star Game.

According to Jose Armando from Claro Sports, Messi and Jordi Alba did not travel to Austin, Texas, the location of the MLS All-Star Game. Both players are ruled out of the game against the Liga MX All-Stars.

Messi did not participate in the 2025 MLS Skills Challenge. Alba was named as one of the players to participate in the Skills Challenge, but he did not take part. The MLS announced an updated roster of the 2025 MLS All-Star team without Messi, confirming that the Argentine will not be playing.

Will Messi Face Punishment?

MLS rules state that any player who chooses not to participate in the MLS All-Star Game without an approved medical reason can receive a 1-game suspension.

Messi could potentially face a one-match ban in the MLS. Inter Miami's next game is against FC Cincinnati on Saturday at Chase Stadium.

It will be a crucial game for Inter Miami as they hope to climb the table in the Eastern Conference and the Supporters' Shield standings.

Messi is yet to be suspended for the game against FC Cincinnati, and a decision is expected to be made before the game on Saturday. Lizzy Becherano from ESPN reports that the MLS will not immediately sanction Messi and Alba.
