Wolfsburg officially terminate Christian Eriksen contract

Manchester United have already moved into a new chapter since Christian Eriksen’s departure, but the former midfielder remains a player who left a lasting impression at Old Trafford.

The Dane arrived at United in the summer of 2022 as one of Erik ten Hag’s first major additions, bringing a wealth of Premier League and European experience to a midfield that was being rebuilt.

Eriksen quickly became an important part of Ten Hag’s plans, helping United finish third in the Premier League during his first season and win the Carabao Cup.

His time in Manchester also produced another trophy when United lifted the FA Cup in 2024, although his role gradually became more limited as the midfield options changed.

By the end of his three-year spell, Christian Eriksen had made 107 appearances for United and scored eight goals, with the club confirming his departure after the 2024/25 season.

Now, Eriksen’s future has become uncertain again after VfL Wolfsburg confirmed on their website that his contract has been terminated by mutual agreement.

The Bundesliga club initially signed the former United midfielder on a deal running until June 2027, but Eriksen has now asked to leave after a difficult period.

Wolfsburg confirmed that the decision over his future was left with the player and that they agreed to his request.

The development comes after Eriksen suffered another on-field collapse while representing Denmark in June 2026, five years after his first cardiac arrest at Euro 2020.

Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s match against Finland at Euro 2020 on 12 June 2021 and required CPR and a defibrillator before being resuscitated on the pitch.

He was subsequently fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, commonly referred to as an ICD, and returned to professional football with Brentford in 2022 after leaving Inter Milan.

His comeback eventually led to the move to Manchester United, where he spent three seasons before joining Wolfsburg last year.

Eriksen went on to make 34 appearances for Wolfsburg, scoring three goals and providing 10 assists before the club announced his departure.

The midfielder has since been completing his rehabilitation in Denmark with his family, with Wolfsburg confirming in July that he would undergo an individual rehabilitation programme in his home country while remaining in contact with the club and his doctors.

Eriksen has now made it clear that being close to his family is his priority.

“At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark.

“I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together.”

The 34-year-old has not confirmed that he is retiring from football, meaning it remains unclear whether he will attempt another comeback or bring an extraordinary playing career to an end.
