On Wednesday, a surfer was attacked by a shark on Kauai.

The incident occurred around 3:10pm, local time, and the unidentified male victim reportedly suffered multiple leg wounds. After being treated by first responders, he was transferred to Wilcox Medical Center. His condition is unclear at this time.

As for the size and species of the shark, that information has yet to be released. The attack occurred at Pine Trees, a famed spot on Kauai’s North Shore, and accordingly, officials closed the beach at Hanalei Bay.

Details surrounding the attack are scarce at the moment. Some are reporting that the victim was a local lifeguard and waterman, but no official statement has been released.

Additionally, there have been reports of another shark sighting, this one on the south side of the island, at Poipu Beach later that same day. Nobody was attacked, but officials still put up precautionary warning signs and closed the beach.

Surfers will know the name Pine Trees, as that’s where Bruce and the late-great Andy Irons cut their teeth, then grew up to be two of the biggest surf stars the world has ever seen, both in their respective ways.

As for another notorious incident on Kauai’s shores, Bethany Hamilton lost her arm on October 31st, 2003 to a tiger shark at Tunnels Beach – about a 15-minute drive from Hanalei.

This is a developing story; more information to come.
