One of the great swimmers in U.S. Olympic history is reportedly hanging up her goggles at the end of the 2025 season.
On Saturday, Sports Illustrated's Pat Forde shared that 28-year-old record-holder Lilly King has decided to retire at the conclusion of the World Championships in Singapore later this summer.
Per Forde: "Lilly King, world-record holder in the 100 [breaststroke], multi-time Olympic gold medalist and one of the fiercest competitors in the history of the sport, has announced her retirement effective at the end of the 2025 season."

An Evansville native, King graduated from Indiana University and will compete in the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis next week before preparing for the Worlds in a couple months — something she confirmed in a post to her Instagram account over the weekend.
"Well folks, my time has come," she captioned a series of photos from throughout her storied career. "This will be my final season competing. I'm fortunate heading into retirement being able to say I have accomplished everything I have ever wanted in this sport. I feel fulfilled."
"That being said, it has always been important to me that my last meet in the US be at the pool that started it all. I have been racing in the IU Natatorium since I was 10 years old," King continued. "From state meets, to NCAAs, Nationals, and anything in between, this pool has been my home."
"I didn't quite make it 20 years (only 18) of racing in Indy, but this is as close as I'm gonna get!" the swimming legend exclaimed. "I look forward to racing in front of a home crowd one last time. See you in Indy!"
King will undoubtedly go down as one of the best to do it in the women's circuit and her retirement definitely marks the end of an era for American swimming.
We still have her for at least a couple more events though, so let's enjoy watching her compete while we can!
