'Champion’s mindset': Stefanos Tsitsipas looking forward to 'journey ahead' with new coach Goran Ivanisevic

Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas has expressed optimism about his journey ahead with his new coach Goran Ivanisevic. The 26-year-old recently made a change in his backroom staff after a series of unimpressive performances on the court, which has already forced him out of the top 20 in the ATP rankings.

Tsitsipas, in a post on his official account on the social media platform Instagram, announced the arrival of the former Wimbledon winner Ivanisevic as his new coach. The two-time Grand Slam runner-up stated that he is looking forward to starting a ‘new chapter’ with the former world number two.

“I’m happy to begin a new chapter with Goran Ivanisevic joining my team as coach,” wrote Tsitsipas. “Goran’s experience, passion for the sport, and champion’s mindset are things I greatly respect, and I’m looking forward to the journey ahead with him by my side. I’m optimistic about what we can build together.”

Ivanisevic is famous for his coaching stint with Serbia’s legendary tennis star Novak Djokovic. During their time together, which lasted six years and ended in 2024, the former world number one, who is often regarded as the greatest player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era, lifted as many as 30 titles at the highest level. That included 10 Grand Slams, two ATP Tour Finals and seven ATP 1000 titles.

Tsitsipas is going through a rough patch over the course of the last few years, which also saw him change his coaching staff on more than one occasion. His most recent appearance was at the French Open, where he was knocked out after losing in the second round to Italy’s Matteo Gigante with a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. It was the seventh occasion this season in 11 competitions where Tsitsipas suffered a defeat before the quarterfinals stage. Tsitsipas’ best appearance this year came in Dubai, where he lifted the title after beating Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
