Spain is hosting Denmark on clay in Marbella in the Davis Cup qualifiers. The hosts couldn’t bring Carlos Alcaraz or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, but definitely have winning chances with the away team mostly relying on their No. 1, Holger Rune. But maybe Elmer Moller or Wimbledon sensation August Holmgren can step it up for the Scandinavians? Time will tell. We predict all five individual rubbers in this tie; who do you think will win?
Head-to-head: Carreno Busta 3-1
Pablo Carreno Busta used to dominate this rivalry in 2021-22, but of course a lot has changed since. The Spaniard is nearing the end of his career and now has to try hard to force his way back into the Top 100. Particularly on clay this season, he’s been vulnerable to getting overwhelmed physically by his opposition. Holger Rune can probably grind him down if he keeps a clear head and he’s got all the tools in the book to adjust his game plan accordingly. Just a question of execution under pressure.
Prediction: Rune in 2
Head-to-head: First meeting
Jaume Munar has been so impressive on hard courts and grass this year, but in the meantime seems to have lost some of his clay touch. However, with all the confidence he should still be a valuable member of the team and a strong No. 1 for Spain. Elmer Moller is dangerous and has already proved that multiple times in Davis Cup, defeating Alexander Bublik or Hamad Medjedovic over the course of the last year. But his form has suffered recently after almost breaking Top 100 in July and his game is inconsistent despite the insane backhand.
Prediction: Munar in 2
Head-to-head: First meeting
The Spanish team hasn’t nominated any doubles specialists in Marbella, but all their players can play the discipline to some extent. Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar have actually been competing with each other pretty regularly this season, reaching the Rio de Janeiro final. On clay that could be enough to beat August Holmgren and Johannes Ingildsen, even with the latter being the only purely doubles-focused player in this match. They can play baseline-oriented tennis and probably not get punished for it.
Prediction: Martinez/Munar in 3
Head-to-head: First meeting
It’s been another season of Holger Rune not quite putting his game together to a level that would help him truly join the top ranks of men’s tennis. It can hurt him in matches like this. Jaume Munar is a warrior, who will run from corner to corner with ultimate dedication and force the Dane to be smarter about his point construction than he usually is. While Rune has all the tools in his skillset, the 2025 more aggressive version of Munar’s game will apply plenty of pressure and it could be enough to make him crack.
Prediction: Munar in 3
Head-to-head: First meeting
If this tie comes down to the deciding rubber, it could be a setting for Elmer Moller to thrive in. At the beginning of the year, he earned Denmark a hard-fought win over Serbia by coming back from a set down against Hamad Medjedovic. His game’s limitations on the serve and forehand lose their importance in slower conditions and his unreal backhand gets the chance to shine. If it comes to this, he will have a shot at outlasting the veteran Carreno Busta.
Prediction: Moller in 3
