Grigor Dimitrov ’s Wimbledon campaign ended in heartbreak as he was forced to retire despite being two sets ahead against world number one Jannik Sinner . The Bulgarian had been playing some of his best tennis and was in control of the match.
At 2-2 in the third set, Dimitrov suddenly grabbed his chest after serving an ace. He collapsed to the court in clear discomfort, prompting Sinner to rush over from across the net to check on him.

Medical staff arrived quickly, and two physios helped Dimitrov off the court for treatment. After a short break, he returned to shake Sinner’s hand and confirm his retirement from the match.
It was a cruel end for the 34-year-old, who has become known for his misfortunes at major tournaments. This marks his fourth consecutive Grand Slam retirement, including last year’s injury against Daniil Medvedev at the same stage.
Wimbledon’s play on the 7th of July ended on a very sour note as Grigor Dimitrov had to retire from his fourth round encounter against Jannik Sinner. This has created shockwaves across the entire tennis circuit, including Roger Federer who was spending the entire day watching the matches.
Federer dominated the headlines during the day’s play at Wimbledon. The Swiss man was sent a lot of encouraging words from Novak Djokovic after the Serb’s win over Alex de Minaur earlier in the day.
The Swiss Maestro acknowledged those words and briefly exchanged words with him after the match. However, there was nothing to acknowledge in the last men’s fourth round of this year’s Wimbledon.
There will be further developments on the condition of Dimitrov after this retirement. However, for now, it has been a sorry tale for the 2017 ATP Finals champion.
Jannik Sinner has advanced to the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the fourth year in a row. He will face World No. 10 Ben Shelton next. Shelton earlier came from a set down to beat Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(1), 7-5 and secure his first quarter-final at the All England Club.
Grigor Dimitrov’s run of injury misfortune began at Wimbledon last year. He slipped during the first set of his fourth-round match against Daniil Medvedev and hurt his knee. That marked the beginning of a troubling pattern.
Two months later, he retired during the US Open quarter-final against Frances Tiafoe due to physical issues. His struggles continued into this season, retiring in his first-round match at the Australian Open with a groin injury and again at Roland Garros after picking up a leg problem.
Despite limited expectations at this year’s Wimbledon, Dimitrov impressed with his form. He was close to securing a second win over a world No. 1, having previously beaten Novak Djokovic in Madrid back in 2013.
