The updated Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) rankings has seen some significant movement, following strong performances by several WTA stars over the last few weeks.
The UTR rankings is a global system that rates players on a single scale from 1.00 to 16.50, regardless of age, gender, or location. UTR aims to provide a consistent and accurate measure of a player's skill level, allowing for fair and competitive play across different levels.
The algorithm used provides an intriguing insight into the current form of the top players in the game. Scoring victories against higher-ranked players is worth more in the UTR list than the official ATP or WTA Ranking, meaning they offer a more accurate reflection of the current form at the top of the game.
With this in mind, Canadian tennis sensation Victoria Mboko was the largest mover up the UTR rankings after her win at this month's Canadian Open, a WTA 1000 event. The 18-year old defeated four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in a thrilling final, securing her first WTA title.
The Canadian started the year ranked at World No.333 on the WTA Rankings table, but has climbed to a career-high of World No.24. Furthermore, her victory in Montreal has seen her UTR ranking rise, as she sits at No.19.
British star Emma Raducanu also saw a significant rise on the UTR rankings table in recent weeks. The former US Open champion has been in solid form over the past few weeks, reaching the semifinals at the DC Open last month before falling to World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in three thrilling sets during their third round Cincinnati Open encounter.
Raducanu's performance has seen her climb up to No.9 on the UTR rankings, leapfrogging the likes of Jessica Pegula and Jasmine Paolini. Top-ranked American Coco Gauff currently leads the UTR ranking, with Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek rounding out the top three.
