As main draw action heats up at the WTA Nottingham Open, several intriguing early-round matchups offer a mix of local talent, rising stars, and experienced campaigners looking to find their footing on grass. With British hopefuls looking to impress in front of home fans and emerging names testing themselves against tour regulars, expect tightly contested battles across the board. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match, including Beatriz Haddad Maia vs McCartney Kessler. But who will advance?

WTA Nottingham Day 2 Predictions

Francesca Jones vs Harriet Dart

Head-to-head: first meeting

Francesca Jones reached the second round in Nottingham last year and will be looking to match or better that result this time around but the Briton comes into this clash on the back of a first-round exit at Queen’s Club last week. Harriet Dart, meanwhile, has struggled recently, with a string of early exits, including a disappointing second-round loss at the Ilkley Open. While the two have never faced each other before, Jones’ recent momentum and superior grass-court adaptability give her an edge over Dart, who has struggled for consistency this year. Expect a tight battle, but Jones’ consistency and confidence should see her through in three sets.

Magda Linette vs Alexandra Eala

Head-to-head: Linette 1–0 Eala

Magda Linette won their only meeting in Abu Dhabi last year but has struggled for form and consistency recently. The grass-court conditions will also make this a very different match, albeit neither player is particularly comfortable on the surface. Alexandra Eala arrives in better form, however, and has been making strides on the grass winning four of her last six, including two Nottingham victories this week in the qualifying rounds. Though Linette has more grass-court experience, Eala’s momentum and aggressive game could edge this.

Prediction:Eala in 3

Sonay Kartal vs Leolia Jeanjean

Head-to-head: first meeting

Leolia Jeanjean arrives in form after playing through the qualifying rounds, battling past Heather Watson and teenager Mika Stojsavljevic. Sonay Kartal is the higher ranked of the two and can cause problems for her opponent here, as well as having the advantage of playing in front of a home crowd. However her shaky serve could be exploited. Jeanjean’s consistency may prove decisive on the grass at the WTA Nottingham Open.

Mingge Xu vs Katie Volynets

Head-to-head: first meeting

This is an intriguing matchup between rising British talent Mingge Xu and the more experienced Katie Volynets. While Xu’s been building momentum at the lower level this season, Volynets’ greater experience at this level should give her the edge, especially on grass where her solid return game could make the difference. Volynets is the clear favorite on paper, but expect the home crowd to push Xu to make this competitive. The American’s consistency will likely prove too much in the end.

Prediction: Volynets in 2
