Day 4 of the WTA Wuhan Open promises an action-packed day of tennis as the Round of 16 matches take place. Every match is intriguing on paper, but this article features the No. 2 seed, Iga Swiatek, who will take on Belinda Bencic. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for every match on the slate. But which players will advance to the quarterfinals?
Head-to-Head: Siegemund 2-0 Frech
Laura Siegemund got her third top 10 win of the season as she upset Mirra Andreeva after losing the first set. Siegemund stayed solid and was significantly helped by Andreeva, who made 15 double faults in the match and was emotionally vulnerable. This is a great opportunity for the German to make a WTA 1000 quarterfinal, and if she plays well, I have her as a slight favourite against Magdalena Frech.
Prediction: Siegemund in 3
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Iva Jovic is making the most of her lucky loser spot as she defeated Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the second round. It was a close match, but Jovic put up better numbers behind her serve, which proved to be the difference. Katerina Siniakova was even more impressive in the second round as she pounced on Maya Joint’s serve. Siniakova will look to employ the same tactic against Jovic, who doesn’t have the biggest serves. I am going with the former quarterfinalist in this one.
Prediction: Siniakova in 2
Head-to-Head: Pegula 2-3 Alexandrova
Jessica Pegula needed seven match points to defeat compatriot Hailey Baptiste in the second round. This was Pegula’s fifth consecutive match that got to the third set, and she seemed thrilled to win following a close loss to Linda Noskova last week. However, the long matches must be taking their toll on the American, and Ekaterina Alexandrova is too good a player not to take advantage. This will be their fourth meeting of the season, and my prediction is in favour of the Russian player.
Prediction: Alexandrova in 3
Head-to-Head: Swiatek 4-1 Bencic
Iga Swiatek lost just two games in her opening match against Marie Bouzkova and registered her 60th win of the season. She is the first woman in this century to record 60 or more wins for four consecutive years. Belinda Bencic will be looking to put up a better fight than she did the last time these two played, and I believe she will. However, I can’t see her winning this.
Prediction: Swiatek in 2
