Nintendo Switch Online just added three classic Game Boy games and one Game Boy Color game to their retro collection. We have a shoot-em-up, a puzzle game, an adventure game, and an RPG, meaning that most players will find something to appeal to them. Let’s take a look at the new additions.
This entry in the popular Gradius shoot-em-up series begins with a heart-pounding section where your ship is chased by a giant enemy ship through a maze of asteroids. After that, you shoot your way through alien enemies, collecting power-ups that change depending on how many you collect before activating them. Like most Gradius games, Interstellar Assault is difficult, but it keeps you wanting to come back and try again.
This simple puzzle game stars the loveable Kirby and his friends. Kirby’s animal buddies are falling from the sky over a stack of stars. Match up two identical animals to make them disappear, and sandwich the stars between matching animals to advance to the next level. While this game doesn’t bring anything particularly original to the stacking puzzle genre, the charm of Kirby’s world makes it a fun time.
In this Game Boy Color gem, you’re a child shipwrecked on a deserted island, and you need to survive long enough to find your missing father. You find food and water and gather items in the wilderness to be used as tools. As you progress, more areas of the island open up to explore, and you discover more secrets. If you’re looking for an accessible survival game that doesn’t punish you, this is the game to play.
You are Prince Theo, who must recover the Sword of Hope to save the kingdom from a dragon who is controlling the king. Although classified as an RPG, this game shares many elements with an old-school point-and-click adventure. The game includes turn-based battles like in RPGs, but during exploration, you can use different commands such as “look” and “hit” to interact with the environment. Some might consider this a bulky interface, but fans of old-school point-and-click games like Shadowgate and Maniac Mansion should feel at home.
All four of these games are worth trying out, and you’re likely to find something you enjoy. Nintendo keeps retro gaming alive through Nintendo Switch Online, giving new generations a chance to try these older games. You don’t need HD graphics to have a great time.
