Some people think indie RPGs are a samey bunch. With tools like RPG Maker readily available to the average user, it’s not that difficult to release your own RPG. However, even in the sea of RPG Maker games, there are plenty of standout titles. Here are 5 awesome indie RPGs that you should definitely play.

1. Aveyond

This entry is for the entire Aveyond series. All the games are set in a vast, fanciful world full of vampires, witches, fairies, and other mystical creatures. The writing is hilarious, and each game has a cast of highly memorable playable characters. With downright gorgeous music, numerous sidequests, and endless charm, this series desperately needs more love – and a revival.

2. Undertale

You’ve heard of Undertale, right? What more is there to say about the charming pixel RPG that took the world by storm with its clever subversion and the way it plays with the player’s mind? Well, there’s more to the game than subversion. The characters are loveable, the “bullet hell” battles are unique, and the music is sublime. Also, this game has one of the most charming Christmas lands in gaming, making it a great game to play at the holiday season.

This epic tale is actually made of five separate games that all link together into one giant story. You are Marine, a peasant girl who must gather thirteen warriors to save her land from tyranny. There are giant worlds to explore and a downright amazing soundtrack. Plus, you can jump, which makes for some great fun leaping around the landscape. In addition, there are tons of secrets to discover. If you’re looking to lose yourself for a few dozen hours, pick up this bundle.

4. Planet Stronghold

This is a hybrid between an RPG and a visual novel, with a fun sci-fi storyline. You pick one of two playable characters, date interesting crewmates, and battle hostiles in many different worlds. You can shift difficulty levels at any time, meaning that if a battle is giving you trouble, you can go to Easy mode for that one battle and then switch back to Normal. This makees for a challenging, yet relaxing, experience.

5. Evoland

The unique presentation of Evoland sets this game apart from other indie RPGs. You begin with nothing – black and white graphics, no sound – but as you advance, you unlock advancements in graphics, sound, and gameplay that take you through the evolution of gaming. It may be a short experience, but every moment of it is memorable. Besides, being short means you don’t have to dedicate a hundred hours of your life.

These are just a few of the awesome indie RPGs out there. Indie RPGs offer experiences that show how creativity more than makes up for the lack of a big budget. They also remind you of the days when gameplay was more important than graphics buzzwords like HD and 4K. If you want to lose yourself in an adventure, go play some indie RPGs.
